G4 Expo Rack - CB Aerial Options |
|
My expo rack will arrive next week and I will need to relocate the CB antenna mount onto it. I currently use a Sirio Performer mast or a conventional stinger style flexi whip with a sprung base. Both are too long for off-road use as they catch the trees. Anyone know who makes the short stainless antenna that comes standard on the G4 models?
Even better, any G4 owners have one they don't use? 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Hi CFB,
The short aerial on the G4 event vehicles is a VHF aerial tuned for 160MHz so will not work on CB, in fact it is likely to damage it... I have fitted a CB aerial to a chum of mine's D3 using a small right angled bracket on the rear of the rack where the tie down rings fit. I used the K40 antenna from Nevada which is a good quality aerial but not to big and bulky. I have a spare right angled bracket it you decide on this route but cannot get it until next week. I have 2 VHF aerials mounted on my rack like this and it's fairly neat. Would take a pic but away at the moment...
Cheers, Richard. Off Roading is OK.... But I'd rather be Boating!

Thunderpole Trucker80 is shorter than most antenna. I'm going to replace my Orbitor with a Trucker as the Orbitor is just too long for roof mount offroad.
More here: http://www.kcb.co.uk/shop2/index1.html I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Andy - when my new CB was fitted by Knight's at Kirton Lindsey, they advised a longer aerial to get the SWR reading down to the right level (or whatever it should be!) - and the one they fitted must be over one and a half metres, if not more. It survived Tong on the 3rd and although it seems very long - it's also very whippy and seems to bounce, quite happily off anything it hits.
Richard I was taught to be cautious.

I've been having real problems getting a mount point on the Expo rack - the standard brackets cannot go around the frame, and the ones that fit into the slot in the bars seem fine-ish for the 2m/70cm but i'm not sure how they will cope with the more solid 28Mhz antenna. methinks it will just break the bracket/slot and end up on the road. Anyone got picks/details of a good solid antenna mount onto the expo rack (not roof rails).......

Andy - if it's for close convoy use you can stick a 50-ohm dummy load on the end of a length of coax. The coax could be laid over the roof rack contents, or very loosely laid over boot/trunk contents. The rig will be happy with the 50-ohm load and there will be enough radiation for short distance contacts. If someone gets lost / separated, you have to change antenna, but it's OK for a few 100 yards...

Option 12 is to do what the Good Buddies across the water (used to) do - Huge base-loading coil with very long whip but all mounted low down on front or rear bumper or tow hitch or A-frame. The long whip keeps itself out of trouble, the base mount can be very tough.
Disadvantages are a rather distorted transmission pattern and electric shocks to anyone touching it during Tx
But it works. 2006 D3 finally swapped for a 2016 D4 Graphite in Graphite grey. No mods
