2.7 TDV6 - locking crank to undo nose belt - flywheel lockin
I'm looking to replace my oil pump on our 2.7 TDV6 Lion motor. Have read the guide at https://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/us...oner~0.pdf but confused about locking the crank in order to undo the nose bolt holding the crank timing belt cog in place.
In the guide a home made tool is used to hold the crankshaft while undoing the nose bolt:
Is this required or is the flywheel locking tool, supplied in the kit, that is fitted through the starter motor hole, sufficient for this purpose?

Yep, I get that, thanks, but I'm not so much concerned about the timing positions but rather the strength that the flywheel locking pins are strong enough to hold the crank in position while the nose bolt is undone - i.e. that it's not going to result in ring gear on the torque converter being damaged or a snapped locking pin inside the bell housing?Mine - MY09 L319 D3 HSE Lion 2.7 TDV6 and modified MY03 LT L318 Discovery 2a HSE Td5 15P

Done, quite literally, hundreds of them using the tools supplied in the kit. They will be fine My D3 Build Thread

Perfect, thanks. I was just checking that it's purpose was actually to lock down the crank shaft and could handle that level of torque being applied to it rather than only being a locator to hold it still while the old belt was slipped off and new one on. Thanks.Mine - MY09 L319 D3 HSE Lion 2.7 TDV6 and modified MY03 LT L318 Discovery 2a HSE Td5 15P

That picture of the tool was my home made one that I used on my car when we first found out about the weak Oil pumps about 7 or 8 years ago now, I still have it on a shelf like a museum peice lol.
I have another tool that I made and designed that works perfectly and have changed hundreds of Oil pumps with it, it was designed so you do not need to remove the starter motor to fit the tool to lock the flywheel. It fits on the front of the engine.
As DM says if your not sure or have not done one before then use the kits thats available online they work ok.

Well you are correct. Jaguar do a different locking tool which goes into the fly wheel teeth.
I could not see one for sale.
Ppl use the other tool here without issue.
The worst I Fore see was a broken tool

On topic but a question. I' m soon about to change my front 2 belts and while I'm there the oil pump also. Is it possible to hire the locking gear? Was going to buy the bits from Rimmer as they were very reasonable with the lpfp recently. Didn't really want to purchase anything I was not going to use in the future, being a tight wad.
54 plate D3 HSE. 11000 miles. Bought from a previous member on here and a great car.

Yeah, now we are talking and someone understands what I'm on about! I didn't think that timing pin would be the factory solution. But very glad to hear the many reports that the much cheaper timing belt locking pin tool holding up just fine to the extra duties as the proper tools look to be GBP 100 + in price before considering international freight!
