Pirelli ATRs, AT+ or Cooper ATT
Morning....
A quick question, and maybe some advice!
I have had 3 Disco's, the current a D4 V8. I have Pirelli ATR's on it at the moment, and in fact, all the Discos had them. So far, I have only had some fun in the mud, but it did eventually get itself out.
I am due a new set of tires but I am battling to find ATR's, and can occasionally get the AT+.
Now I see Cooper has launched the ATT. Has anyone had any experience with them?
I have not done too much off roading with the V8, but thats because of the "2 pink foots" in the house the last 3 years. The kids are now old enough to travel into Mozambique, so will start doing that often. In the past, the ATR's seemed to be ok in Mozambique and would go get another set if I could, but the local dealers say they will be stopping production soon.
After some research I have found the following.
The ATR is a generally good all rounder. But suffers in snow and not the best in mud. Fuel consumption average.
The AT+ is excellent off road, very good on road, but after 10000km they seem to become noisy, and fuel consumption will go up and higher when compared to ATR. No idea on tread wear.
The Cooper ATT is new. Not much found on it, but they say consumption down and a slightly more aggressive 60 / 40 road bias split. No one knows the tread life, or have any idea what they will be like over time. (noise etc), but they seem to be a viable replacement tire.
So what to do. They are available in 19" They are cheaper then the ATR and AT+, but need to know if they are the right thing to do.Previously Freelander II

I must have driven more than 250k miles on ATR’s. Whilst we don’t get much snow in the South West, whenever we did I could only praise their performance. They’re not an MT, but I never got stuck.
I could get 50k miles from a set and always found them to be really tough, especially the sidewalls.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

I agree
The ATR is very very good!!! I have done some snow in the high Lesotho mountains, and deep mud during the Land Rover Experience course....Damn....I was the last vehicle on the track in torrential rain, got little stuck going uphill with the mud almost at the hub, but after many attempts, the ATRs did get me out.
In all 3 the Discos, I think I have covered about 215000km on the Pirelli ATR and am very happy with them.
As for the snow, we don't really have snow in SA, only beach sand and occasionally mud.
But, I can't find any ATRs at them moment. So looking at options.Previously Freelander II

I miss ATRs. If Pirelli can’t sort out supply maybe they should get someone in that can and stick to calanders.

I live in SA. UK citizen, house in London.....But i live in SA and ATRs' have normally always been difficult to get for the 19" Discos.
Question? Who has changed to a 265/55/R19 or even 275 on the same R19 rim?
I am not wheel wise, can it be done?
Interestingly, I saw a VW 'Ama-Crock TDi' with the AT+ last night. Man they do look good.Previously Freelander II

You need different things out of a tyre in SA. What works well in the UK will not do the same in SA and vice-versa. Find yourself a set of BFG AT's and be done with it, there isn't much that will outperform them in SA conditions if you do a large percentage of driving off the tar.

So I ordered a set of the Cooper Discoverer ATT 's today...Hopefully fit them by this weekend.
I did endless research and found a couple of people who had the AT Plus fitted. Many are mumbling about road noise and fuel consumption.
I was lead to a tire certification website and the older Scorpion ATR has very high road resistance after 100km/h, making it heavy on fuel. It scored a RED "F" for consumption, and here I thought my Disco4 was just heavy. 15L/100. Wet braking is also not great with the Scorpion ATR scoring an E, as in 15m over the standard test tire.
The Cooper comes in at C for Fuel, and C for wet, but they are noisier. Its ok, 2 toddlers in the car, tires are the least concern.
I will post pics next week when I get them.
Thanks for the chat!Previously Freelander II

My Discos' in Southern African have all got BF Goodrich ATs and have not gone wrong in all sorts of our terrain.
Got them here on my Disco and theyre are not the best TBH in the cold!!

The Compomotive PD1881’s are specifically designed to fit over the bigger brakes on a D4. Have you checked with Barry at Compomotive? He’d know for sure about the D4 V8 brakes.
I know they fit over the large discs of the Bowler completion vehicles.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE
