| Drive train whine 65+MPH - advice on fault finding please |

I'd appreciate some advice on a developing drive chain issue.
I'm the new owner of a LR 3 V8. It's a 06 with 60k in good condition;dealer maintained.
The vehicle has a whine from the drive chain starting at around 65-70 MPH. The whine is present only when under acceleration; when I take my foot off the accelerator the noise stops.
I've searched the site and there's a variety of possibilities it seems. My question is where to start eliminating possible causes. I do not think it's the transmission not least because I flushed it very recently and it's very smooth. I will check the wheel bearings, but have had the wheels off recently and think they're fine. It's not the AC.
From what's I've read, the diffs look like a contender. Can anyone advise what I can do in this space? I see that they sell diff rebuild kits in the US. Is this a doable job for someone at home?
Any advice appreciated on where to start with this.

Seriously, had the same issue in ours from 70k when we bought it and it's now on 170k with no change...
I suspect the front diff as the noise is central and disappears on a trailing throttle and both front bearings have been replaced. There is also a metal rubbing metal noise from the back that is unaffected by braking which I suspect is the rear diff. I replaced all the gearbox oils some time ago but it didn't make any difference. -------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks. So I lifted the front today to check the wheel bearings. There is some lateral play, ie left/ right on both wheels but no 'up/down' play. Which leaves me confused. Could that be hub wear, and wouldn't there be up/down longitudinal play as well as latitudinal play if the hub was on the way out? PAGODA

Side to side will be something worn on the steering or maybe a bush.
You can get kits with long wires and headphones so you can listen to parts underneath your motor whilst driving it.
NVH kits or something like that!

I have the same problem. whine noise between 60 and 70 mph and only on acceleration. It’s been there for about 50K despite replacing bearings, prop shaft, transmission and diff oils. Any ideas very welcome.

When you say you've replaced the bearings, do you mean the wheel bearings, ie the hubs?
I replaced my front right hub not long after I made the post - maybe a year or so. The hub play didn't show up, but it was very clear when the car was put on a lift and accelerated that the hub was at least partly responsible for noise. I replaced the other hub a couple of months ago because I was fed up looking at the thing on my garage shelf.
Try sticking the car on a garage lift supported properly and safely in a safe environment and putting it in drive to hear where the noises are coming from. It's how I diagnosed the wheel bearing - it was as clear as day as soon as we did it. PAGODA

Thank you. It's going up on a lift on Thu to have its rear arms and bushes replaced I will see if we can trace the noise to one of the bearings then. I've only replaced one bearing due to movement (and where the noise seemed to be coming from) so it could easily be one of the others.
