Wading and the door drains
Can you help?
I'm scratching my head and was wondering what prevents water entering the cabin through the door when wading. I notice that at the bottom of the door are a series of holes presumably to drain the water that enters day to day through the window glass seals. This water must run down the inside of the door and out the bottom of the door itself and never enter the cabin.
But when the car is wading, there must be a depth that you mustn't go past and that must be the bottom of the aperture of the inside of the door itself. Any deeper and the water will then spill over the top of the inside panel of the door aperture?
Is that right? Does that make ANY sense?

Theoretically, the double door seals stop the water coming in, but in practice this is not always the case

Yes, but water would enter the door panel interior via the small drain holes at the bottom of the door and then spill over the top of the interior door skin aperture surely?

The hole on the left is what I'm talking about.
What do you think?

Whilst some have waded so deep they floated away, literally. At least one person on here wrote his car off when crossing a ford and the car turned into the SS Disco.
The time to be afraid is when the car tells you it’s going into extended mode, ie it’s starting to float. I was never happier getting to the other side.

Maybe none of the seals are 100 percent effective, but they slow the rate of water enough for most people not to notice during day to day duties and even the odd serious bit of wading.

I've had water above the door handle on one side whilst wading and the interior stayed totally dry.2014 D4 XS

I suppose the theory is that if any water does get past the outer seal, it will be a slow flow, and to fill the door to its capacity before it also overflows to the interior will also be a slow process, so yes eventually your theory will be correct.
I have waded well above the door bottoms and never had a problem.

Just remember to keep the drain holes clear - I've had several very muddy wades and had water sloshing around necessitating a prod about with a stick.I see no ships........

From what i know, seals are not intended to stop the water while stationary in a puddle, instead, keep on moving slowly while in a wade, permit to cohesion forces of the water to maintain the molecules sticky to the others and flow around all small holes of the body.
