Keeping the sidelights on permanently

I wonder if this is a trick anyone has managed?

I'm using my D3 as a daily driver at the moment and notice that the majority of other cars on the road have daytime running lights on. To try and avoid being a dark shadow on the road, I tend to turn on my (LED) side lights when driving (mostly country lanes and dual carriageways).

I wondered if anyone has found a way to set these to permanently come on, so that I can leave the main headlight switch set to Auto? I managed this on my Mk6 Golf through some config programming..

Thanks,
Chris

I think you need Scandinavian mode? Quite a few threads on it here:

Thanks James. Think Scandanavian mode has the full (dipped) headlights on though, whereas I ideally only really need the LED side lights.. Not sure if there's a setting for that on the D3?!

Thanks,
Chris

I'd just run in Scandinavian DRL mode, yes the dipped beam is on but that only increases visibility - which is your target?

The Chinese socket is centre top of the radiator and is unused, take a feed from there to the side lights or better still fit ring lights inside the fog lights and you will have lights that come on with the ignition and stay on for about 10 seconds after the ignition is switched off? Thumbs Up

I have Scandinavian DRL configured but according to the TSB and this forum it’s supposed to work only in the lights off position. I think that’s how it actually does, too.. Whistle

I normally drive with the light switch in auto. The side lights are on as are the xenons. Cornering lights turn on when turning left/right. Although the latter shouldn’t be affected by settings.

not 100% what you want, as it would default to auto lights,

but you can remove the switch knob if your good at DIY and cut off the 2 limiters on the rear of the knob. The switch will go to an extra position to the left of off. (like fords do, which is where the switch comes from)

Then connect the P terminal on the switch uptp an ignition supply. (available on the switch also).

When the switch was in this extra position the external side lights would come on with the ignition.

To get dip beam, dash lights, fogs etc. you would have to move the switch to other positions.

Not sure if it would work on D3 but have you read the thread on D4 DRLs using the the fairy lights? Would that work on a D3? I’ve done it to my RRS so I now have the fairy lights on as DRL even in auto. They turn off with the ignition off and doors locked or after 5 minutes of ignition off and doors unlocked.

I turned off the lightsettings in the bcm, and feed my drl with the smog sensor signal. Used a doubleworking relay, so when the main light turns on in auto, the DRLs switch off.
