Running the FBH while charging |
|
Hi all,
I ca't think that this would be a problem, but is it OK to run the FBH (via my Altox) on my D4 while the battery is being charged using a CTEK 7 charger?
My journeys are often only 20-30mins or so; in this weather, with seat heaters etc on, the battery doesn't get change to fully recharge, so I like to leave it overnight from time to time with the charger attached.
Any problem with having the FBH scheduled to come on in the morning, before I've disconnected the charger?
Cheers,
Ade MY2012 D4 HSE in Siberian Silver, 1967 MGB

No, is no problem..
But consider fitting a deep cycle battery for a more thrust worthy operation.
Deep cycle battery’s are far more resistant against low voltage /deep cycle so will last much longer if used in your conditions.. Best regards

Thanks! Couldn't think of any likely problem but thought it was worth checking.
It had a new battery a year ago (Exide AGM) so not planning to swap it out yet, but I'll look into deep cycle ones next time. Hadn't heard of those before...

i've tried it without issue.
gives the FBH more likley hood of starting (due to high voltage)

That's why I wanted to try it. Mine often fails to start as the battery voltage is too low, even though the car itself isn't warning about it. MY2012 D4 HSE in Siberian Silver, 1967 MGB

Keep in mind that you discard a safety feature, especially if you run de blowers (full parking heater function)
The webasto is designed to never start up, if your starting capacity can become in danger... if although it is running and the blowers are also running (different control circuit/not controlled by the webasto) is goes on, till the power is far to low for starting...or a healthy battery (everything below 12v is deep cycle and shortens the life of a battery very very much)
I doubt if a charger is fast enough to overcome that problem, I think the draining with blowers on, is faster than the charging, but that is beyond my electronics calculating expertise Best regards

if the car has been on charge all night, there shouldn't be any problems.

True, but nights can be short
And then the “measuring” sequence is fooled, just wanted to be known... Best regards

I've found (MY14 HSE) that if the battery is low what can happen is the FBH will start and run for it's allotted 20 minutes, but by the end of that the battery is completely jiggered and won't start the car. So if I have any doubts about the state of charge I don't use the FBH.
