Wet passenger footwell problem |
|
Hello all
I’ve ready many times one here this weekend about the seemingly common problem of a soaking wet passenger footwell and that the water seems to come from a blocked sunroof drain. I have a completely sodden carpet on passenger side front - I’ve reached underneath the carpet and there is lots of standing water there.
I have a 2014 car so I’m m hoping that LR will sort this out for me FOC. Most of the posted relating to this seem to refer to older year cars which would be well out of warranty but in my case the car is only 4 years old so I would expect LR to take a sensible view. Any experience of this issue with newer cars?
Thanks
Matt

Unless you have an extended warranty I very much doubt that LR will be much help. With a D4 it's a 10min job to check the outlet behind the wing vent and clear it,if indeed it's blocked.
It will take much longer to dry out the carpet and insulation and I would recommend getting a de humidifier to get it all out.

Thanks very much. I have the extended warranty that came with the car when I bought it from Guy Salmon last October.
Do you think it’s verh likely to be the sunroof drain issue?
Carpets will be a nightmare to dry - they are absolutely soaking!

Also worth removing the pollen filter from behind glove box to see if any water in the housing. Skuttle panels at the bottom of the windscreen can leak into them. Not sure weather it would end up in the footwell as I caught mine before it got any further.

As Drew said, check pollen filter, just to be sure. Given age of your D4 unlikely that the elbows on the sunroof drains have perished, but could be blocked. Both these jobs are 10 mins to check and worth doing before you book it in with the dealer.
A decent dehumidifier will dry that out quickly, get a mains feed unit and leave it on in the car overnight. May take a few days to completely dry out.

Yes the water does find it's way into the passenger footwell from the pollen filter. The scuttle panel may have been poorly re-fitted after windscreen change. Stu

Thanks for all the great advice. So I’ve spent the afternoon trying to work out where the water is coming from and sure enough it’s coming from the near side front sunroof drain.
I pulled back the carpet fully and poured water into the drain and it literally gushed down the door side edge of the passenger footwell behind the wiring loom. I then siphoned out probably about a litre of water from the floor pan.
I have two questions so any answers very welcome:
1- how is it that so much water comes down these drains in the first place - is the sunroof seal not supposed to be watertight?
2- With this problem, which seems fairly common, how on earth does the water end up INSIDE the car.!?
Thanks again

Its a wet gutter system. The sunroof seal prevents water entering the cabin whilst the gutter and drain pipe allows what enters the sunroof cassette to run away.
This has been addressed a million times on the forum and a simple search will have the answer at your disposal but start by ensuring the drain outlet, which is inside the front wing air intake grill, is not blocked.
Search and you will find. Mods:

Thanks. Yes I pulled off the grill and found the end of the rubber pipe poking out. The end wasn’t blocked and I could poke about 1m of 2mm diameter strimmer cord up there. I did the same from the top end and both got to a point where they would travel no further. Still don’t understand how the water ends up in The footwell

Usually, the two main problems are, when blocked at the outlet due to debris etc.
1. The drain pipe fills up and overflows allowing the water to track down the outside of the pipe and run all the way down to the floor.
2. The drain pipe becomes detached from the 90 degree outlet so simply vents onto the floor.
You need to clear those drains and make sure they are free flowing. Mods:

Once you've cleaned the drain lines pour water into the sunroof gutter and make sure you get 4 free flowing drains under the car. I had thought only the front one on mine was blocked but both were on the LHS.

Some good for the tips in this post Now I have some idea of what to look for.
Whilst cleaning my 'new' D4 for the first time yesterday, I found that the passenger footwell carpet was damp. Took the mat out and it did dry out a bit. Then this morning it was damp again and the interior smells of the Demon foam I washed it with.
I know that the previous owner had a screen replaced so maybe the scuttle panel is a good place to start.
Thanks everyone

I have a 65 plate - but i have soaking floors on the drivers side. Is this the same problem?
I am booked into beadles southend LR later this month, before the 3 years runs out, but do assume this to be fixed under warranty... is that a correct assumption???
