Saved £2k this week on the D4 |
|
Morning All,
I'm quite chuffed having 'saved' £2000 this week on the Disco..
Firstly (as per my other posts) the Intake manifold cracked 4 weeks ago, after 3 weeks at the dealer, I managed to get 50% off the repair so I paid a total of £800 for the new intake manifold (with new HP fuel pipes etc) and a courtesy car for the 3 weeks.. Happy with that
As the MOT was due today, I asked the dealer to MOT it while it was there, they called on Friday and said they didn't bother MOTing it as they had already done a health check and saw things it would fail on..
>Front Wiper Blades Smearing
>Rear Wiper Blade Split
>Both Number Plate Bulbs Inop
>NSF Drive Shaft Boot Split
>Corrosion to front to back brake pipe
>Rear Pads have 25% wear left
She didn't say any were advisories.. She said this was a list of failures.. which is obviously a load of rubbish
As it was with them anyway I asked them to price it up...
£1300!!
Needless to say, I ordered a boot from AF (which there was an issue with but I wont go into..) £24
Got new wipers and bulbs etc from Halfrauds on a Trade card £30ish
Got the car back Saturday Morning, did the boot and blades etc, didn't do anything with the brake pipe as it didn't look that bad to me, and left the pads.. as 25% is... well plenty for now, but I have a new set of dustless in the garage for in a few months..
All the work took 2 hours, that included having to go into to Derby to get another Boot..
Car went for MOT today at my local garage (the guy owns a D4 also).. Straight through with 2 advisories..
>Brake Pads on 25%
>Slight corrosion to front to back brake pipe
It makes me wonder how many people just go with the dealer... Disco4 MY16 SDV6 Landmark Black

I can't understand why anyone out of warranty would go to a main dealer for anything
A good indy has much more skin in the game to do a decent job at a fair price IMO Stolen - D4 Loire Blue

not sure how this is even in the MoT ... you don't have to have a rear wiper (or even a rear window ... think van! )

@Hardware..
As far as I know if you have said item attached to the car it must be functional..
so if a van had a rear wiper fitted, but had the window blanked out, the wiper would still have to work..
I could be wrong on that one, someone can correct me by all means..
I did have an instance when I was taking an HGV trailer for MOT, we hadn't inspected it, just took it for MOT, there was a loose bolt on the chassis, so the tester failed it, I drove out, removed the bolt and took it back through.. passed, as the 'manual' says there should be no loose items, doesn't mention if it's removed, as how does the inspector know which holes should be filled and which are just holes.. There is a decent write up on here..
https://www.disco4.com/forum/change-front-...shaft+boot
But, if you know what you're doing it's actually quite easy..
Loosen the big centre nut while the cars on the ground
jack up & axle stand
wheel off
Calliper off and cable tied up out of the way
ABS and pad sensor out of the way (I undid the bracket that holds them too)
top outer wishbone joint off
I loosened the ARB link at the top as well just for some more movement
No need to remove the back plate
Shaft out wheel end
sharp pull so the shaft comes out diff end
then gators off
full clean
new gators
new grease
new clips (best to have the proper tool for these clips, see the one in the link, although you shouldn't have to put it in a vice..)
reassemble in reverse order..
I spent more time cleaning the shaft than stripping and assembling.
I had the shaft out in about 15/20 minutes 30 minutes cleaning reassembled in 15 minutes (as all the tools were next to me Disco4 MY16 SDV6 Landmark Black

The only potential difficult bit is gettng the shaft out of the diff itself, you need two decent bars and out it will pop, If you can borrow one of them stretchy boot tools theres no neeed to remove the shaft.

That all smacks of a total lack of tlc, wipers and n-plate lamps should be seen by the driver surely?
Not a good idea to push pads to low, we find at work the 2nd half of the beake pads tend to wear out pretty fast, sometimes to fast!

Mine just went through an MOT and the rear-wiper and washer jet are not functioning... Mainly because I removed the fuses from them but there was not even an advisory about this...
