Just curious if anyone has the pro / con on the late model D4's spare wheel protection. I seem to have a tray that the spare wheel sits on, as a standard LR part. My old 2013 D4 had the exposed wheel winch cable, which is prone to theft.
Two questions:
1) Is Land Rover's solution sufficient? Is spending cash on a RLD style wheel protector wasted money, or a necessity?
2) I have a set of PD1881 Compomotive wheels on the way, with intent to fit 265/65/18 BFG TA KO2 tyres to. I know it's a squeeze to get it in place, but is the LR tray still a viable option with this wheel / tyre combo?
Thanks in advance for the help!! 2016 D4 HSE Lux

The standard tray is only a bit of plastic. If Ad Blu is fitted (and that tray), the wheel is mounted with the well facing upwards (opposite way up to the original fitment). Whilst I can’t confirm, I would imagine that it’s still possible to cut the supporting cable by reaching through the wheel spokes. One of the first things i bought was the RLD protector.

So, the RLD fits with the wheel upside down? How do you protect damaging the wheel itself if the RLD metal plate is resting against the outward facing wheel? 2016 D4 HSE Lux

It’s a different protector for the later models. ISTR that it fits inside the wheel so that you can’t get to the cable, although it’s a while since I put it on.

Thanks Nigel.
Does this replace the plastic LR tray, or used in conjunction with? 2016 D4 HSE Lux

Guess my last question goes back to #2 in my original post.
Will the LR plastic tray fit 265/65/18 tires on Compomotive wheels? 2016 D4 HSE Lux

yes ... both go on but with the compo’s you will need to reduce the diameter of Uncle Rays plastic bolts so that they will fit in the wheel nut holes otherwise they will not be long enough to fit the retaining clips.
did this myself recently D4 HSE Lux MY16 Club Waitomo

There are pictures on here of the plastic cover having been cut through , but the RLD protector stopped theft. I understand the central core of the plastic cover has metal reinforcement though. Gary

I didn’t need to modify the plastic bolts to fit in my PD1881 spare. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Perhaps Ray has made the diameter a bit larger now? Definitely too big to sit in the Compomotive wheel stud hole considerably but fairly easily solved D4 HSE Lux MY16 Club Waitomo
