Help with tyres (please)
Hi
i'm after some advice on what tyres to fit to my Disco3 HSE.
i have always been a proud supporter of BF Goodrich both mud and all terrains but unfortunatly no 19's so,
Whats the best option? i am looking for something that is more all terrain for the odd bit of green lanning muddy fields and just something that wont let me down when i need it, but will still give me a decent drive on the motorway!! not asking for to much i hope !!
Oh and i am new to all these fancy 4x4 electronic gizmos and buttons in the car, dont have them in the defenders so does changing the tyres for a more agressive tread pattern throw this into a manic landrover hissy fit ? cheers Dan
Welcome to the site Is that 12" vinyl or something else
Sticking to tyres that are the right size (or near enough and guaranteed not to rub)...
Only option for 19" if you want something more aggressive than standard rubber is Goodyear MTRs, if you go to 18" Grabber AT2s, Cooper STs or STTs for 17". There are others but not readily available in the UK AFAIK
D3 doesn't have any issues with different rubber The End

No just 12" vinyl i am glad to say although the addiction has slowed down over the last few years.
more of a name that stuck that i kept using on forums- it is normally a safe bet you dont have to go through the registration details 30 times to find a name that has not already been registered by someone.
anyway back onto the more important issue of Rubber !
cheers for you advice is the goodyear MTR as aggressive as the BF Goodrich mud terrain or somewhere between all terrain and mud terrain
thanks again
Dan

Hi vinyljunkie and welcome also
...it is worth trying the vehicle on "standard" tyres first to make sure you really need the other rubber. While you can run MTR's all the time they are a bit noisier and take about 3mpg off
Compared to the BFG MT's they are a bit different as the MTR's on 19's are still a low profile tyre. Coming from a BFG MT equipped defender I think the MTR's are a bit "coarser" to drive on the road, however they are better on wet tarmac than the MT's were!!!
I certainly prefer to only put them on when need them.
Maybe two sets of wheels? (2 is sufficient DSL )end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

to be honest they only really need to be on between September and Febuary but would still like to keep an aggressive style all terrain pattern through out the year for rocks and stoney paths etc.
it just isn't worth me keeping the standard tyres on, i know they will not stand up to the job i need them to do through the winter months.
Looks like i could be adding to the ever growing tyre collection in the garage, might get some of that racking they have down ATS www.defender50th.co.uk www.lr4x4.com

You can never have enough wheels and tyres! I'm on 19" MT/R's at the moment and they do generate slightly more road noise than the standard Pirelli's but they do have excellent road holding ability for on off road tyre. On my way to my first appointment this morning I had to go over a tight twisty road that had quite a bit of water and ice on it and the D3 took it in its stride. I gave the load pedal a bit more than normal just to see how the MT/R's cope on a cold wet road and the feedback through the steering wheel was very progressive and reassuring. Baring in mind I'm no Tiff Needel so WTFDIK. I like em even though they generate a bit more noise and drop the mpg slightly.Club Exped trailer

I've got 18"'s with Grabber AT2s fitted as second set of wheels - no noticeable road noise and pretty good off road although not as good as MTR's - Don't know where you are in Essex but you're welcome to see mine
