Depends on your distance to lanes really and how comfortable you wanna be
If you ok with bumpy noisy and cold(er) vehicle but very good offroad defender is the one to have however if you have to drive 150 miles round trip to get to lanes and back home Discovery 2 is not too bad, though both have their ups and downs
Discovery 3 is a complete different machine which is very comfy but then again is it as good offroad as a defender??? Most likely no...
I.e if lived by Salisbury plains i wouldn't get anything but a defender but as i need to drive like 50 miles ro the nearest lane (and back another 50 for that matter) i had gone for D2s and D3s
Well i had driven many Jeep CJ5/7s when i was young when i didn't know what getting tired meant and then moved onto Jeep TJs, finally on LRs....2005 D3 V8 SE

I think D1 is a good entry level greenlaner, you can pick up some part modified D1โs for not a lot of money.
Good mix of general performance and a degree of comfort, also relatively easy to fix or mod as you get more experienced.

Bit of a thread resurrection.
I am looking for a Greenland/4x4 response toy. I still have the D5 so I am in the fortunate position where if I break it it can sit on the drive for a few weeks until I get round to repairing it.
Id love a Defender but with how desirable they are and the fact the garage is full, ive ruled it out.
I thought about a D3, Moo's was what I had my eye on but was too slow.
Is D3 too much of a complex beast and I should look at a D2?

Biggest problem with a D3 or 4 is sheer size, there are some lanes they just donโt fit down, sadgill and gatesgarth pass being two that immediately spring to mind. I went for 90 and changed the seats, we went to Kielder forest and back in day no problem, 100 miles each way, itโs just a bit slower ๐๐Joined the BMWX5 45e group

The very best motors for laning are a Landrover Series or a Suzuki SJ/Jimny all the later Landrovers are just to big down many lanes.
The next best thing about the series is even the walkers dont complain at you as it looks old and cute and lets be honest 99 percent of lanes you can do in a std series with no real issues, so no need for the silly macho off roader look and of course the obligatory one life live it sticker
