They are actually the bearings that have been hammered/worn thin within the housing and then fall out and into the sump.
Had the same when I opened up my engine. Most likely spun bearing.

Crank turns fine and there’s no other bits of metal or prticles

With those bits missing, the crank can move and the end result is spun bearings. The problem is they need replacing but I think that it cannot be done insitu. I would not be using that engine until its fixed.
