which bearing

Hi folks hope you are all well
So gonna change a front wheel bearing as it making noise but which one
How can i check when driving straight its got that horrible noise if i turn steering wheel to the left it goes does this make it the osf? Is there a way of checking without taking off?
I downloaded the advice on here looks a reasonable diy job the pdf did say tighten the centre nut to 350nm but i have seen posts saying its now 230nm who is right
Oh and its a 2006 2.7 SE

Any advice always helpful

230. Took me 4 hours a side. Some claim 30 minutes.......

I bought 2 new. The side I thought it was was the opposite to the one it actually was. Jack it up and spin wheels is your best hope but like I said I got it wrong.

Change both and be done with it, the hub and bearing come complete - make sure they are "Timken" hubs

Buy a cheap infrared thermometer.
Take the Discovery for a drive of a few miles and then use the infrared thermometer on both hubs to see which one has a higher temperature.
The one with the higher temp will most likely be the damaged one.

Jack up each wheel, grab it and give it a shake 9-3 and 12-6 with both hands, spin it and it should be obvious, torque for the hub nut was revised lower to 230nm, get new bolts and save some time by cutting off the exposed corroded protruding ends rather than trying to work them out, couple hours should do one and as mentioned go for Timken bearings and avoid the really cheap ones, they won't last! Thumbs Up

Mine had no play in the wheel using the 9-3 and 10-2 method. None at all.

But the bearing was completely shagged!

When cornering the unweighted wheel will stop making the noise if its the bad one. When I had one go on my Audi a4 i had to going 85 to make this check work so it was difficult to find a good enough stretch for it to happen. but it was definate.

On my disco one of mine was really bad and the local indy said they hide them well.

Might as well do em both, agreed.
