LR4 Charging system fault
Hi all.
Got a new warning last night on the dash saying charging system fault. Plugged in my OBD and it’s not finding any codes at all?
Warning was off this morning but came back on after I’d travelled about 100yds!
Haven’t had chance to plug in my OBD yet but I’m assuming it won’t show up again.
Any ideas?

You see this warning, within a few minutes of starting, if the battery sensor wire is disconnected (small green plug assembly on the negative terminal post). Worth checking that is connected correctly maybe?
The small wire connected to the negative terminal on top of the battery.
You have to start somewhere so make sure this is connected?

Nope. Sadly all is connected as it should be, and I’m still not getting any codes

are you able to check you main battery SOC and State of capacity or at least check with multimeter what are you getting on terminals while engine is runnig, bad battery would do this
alternator fault?

Nah, the battery is only 5wks old and it’s a Lucas. Looks like an alternator - I’m dreading the bill already!
Currently sat on the side of the road awaiting the green flag genie to come and tell me I need recovered.

so if new battery was fitted has battery management control module been reset?

Absolutely no idea! The battery was fitted only a few weeks ago and I’ve done about 4-5000 miles since then, so I’m guessing if it was that, it would’ve gone a lot earlier.
It’s in the garage now so I’ll find out tomorrow if it’s just a kidney I need to sell, or whether I need to chuck in my spleen as well

Had the same fault, and I see someone else has also posted this in the last few days.
Just have a look at the Positive terminal array that connects to the battery. There is a small black wire that leads to the back of the fuse box. Mine broke this morning halfway along its length when the battery was reconnected after a reset for some other fault common to V8's. That wire seems to be part of the Charge Sensing wire. I see mine is brittle, so I assume that since we have had 3 reports on the forum, we may see plenty plenty more.
My fix was a walk to the garage, some electric isolation tape, and i was on my way.Previously Freelander II

Now: '12 Freelander II SD4 HSE -
Now '11 Disco4 V8 HSE

Turns out the alternator was cabbaged so a swift replacement was organised and all is well in the world again

“changing system fault”, can’t be any clearer than that! Polite way of saying “alternator is “ It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
