RE-Mapping ecu.
next week i will collect my D3,
to replace my D2 TD5,
i had my TD5 chipped straight away, what a difference,
before the turbo lag was awfull.
questions, which i am sure have been covered numerous times but be gentle as i am a newbie here,
does it make a lot of difference to the perfomance of the vehicle.
does it affect the MPG up or down,
if the first two answers are positive, any suggestions to who i might take the vehicle,
thankyou for an assistance,
TK

Yeah performance improvement is v.noticeable especially midrange, definite improvement mpg (as long as you done have the pedal to the metal all the time. I'd recommend Torq Tune especially as he's one of our own:wink:2004 Discovery 3 - gone
2006 Discovery 3 - gone
2008 Discovery 3 GS - gone
2011 Freelander LE Special Edition - gone
2007 Discovery 3 XS - gone

Same answers but I'd recommend JE, my previous D2 did 125k miles AFTER their stage 2 tune fitted and had 192k miles on on it (All mine) when I part-exd it for the D3 - so I trust their engineering/tuning over the long term - and I put their TDV6 tune on the D3 straight away Cheers

I'd recommend Torq Tune too
There are alternatives however such as Turbochip and JE.21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I have a JE tune and, although the mid-top range power is dramatically increased, there is (and AFAIK always will be) a slight turbo lag from start off. I don't think any tune will totally eliminate this somehow.
Fuel consumption on mine has suffered by about 2 - 3 mpg (worse)
Mine also initially smokes (grey smoke) quite a bit when accelerating hard.
Being a cheapskate I only got the JE tune as they had a 1/2 price offer ... in hindsight I probably should have got the TorqTune, which can be 'tailored' to your requirements I beleive.

I've just had mine re-mapped - Autologic, because I could get it done very locally to me (I can put a brick through their window if the service is )
Its too early to say what the economy is going to do (I've barely done 50 miles), but the general driveability is much improved as has the GO
For example I used to struggle to move off in 2nd, but now 3rd is easy, and 4th possible
In normal drivng - soon after leaving home I join a fast 'A' road a two lane dual carrigaway joined from a very short, sharply curved slip road just before an over bridge. In standard tune it was always an "exciting time" if there were lots of traffic around as I had to hope someone would pull out into the outside lane so I stood a chance of joining and be doing about 50 when I cleared the bridge whipping it hard in 3rd (second was no better, it just meant I had to grab a gear earlier as the revs ran out), now its a case of down the slip road and give it a bootful in 3rd, and I'm doing 70 at the end of the bridge grabbing 6th and stopping accelerating ( - theres a speed camera in the wrong place and I don't want to give GB/AD any more of my money than I need to.)
I bet its drinking like a fish when driven like a hooligan
More on the economy after a week or so once I've got some miles under the tyres.Rob Smith

Bigtk -
I've been watching this one like a hawk for 4 months. My conclusions, for what they are worth are:-
1. Re-map, NOT external chip / dongle / plug-in
2. Not a massive difference between TT, TC, JE; not sure about Autologic
3. Wise comment from someone "Choose someone accessible who can re-do it if your dealer over-writes the re-map (and includes it in the price)."
4. Finally my choice will be TorqTune having read about performance, driveability, economy and smoke production. And nearness to me.
5. TFC knows his stuff like the Pope knows his prayers...
Trouble is - he's just off on his jollies....
Andy
PS there is a spreadsheet of many pages in my gallery depicting TorqTune gains...2006 D3 finally swapped for a 2016 D4 Graphite in Graphite grey. No mods

I drove a couple with TC & JE, and the Autologic is similar.
I'd guess that one of them found out first and the rest "did something similar"
I chose Autologic because of the proximity factor, as someone else suggested - get it done by someone you trust and will back it out if its a complete up.Rob Smith

TC and Autologic are the same tune, not sure of who is the chicken and who is the egg. FWIW I have ran both the JE and the TC on my car, the local dealer did a software update after a service and I commented on the fact that the tune would have gone. They put their tune on mine as they thought they had done it initially I said nothing and thought I would give it a go, after 6 months I went back to JE, there wasnt a huge difference, but I personally feel that TC is a bit less refined than the JE tune, more Boy Racer versus Proper Car. Having said that both are much better than the standard D4 HSE Luxury SDV6,

If you buy second hand, how do you know whether it has been tuned or not. To be honest I don't feel the need to have a re-map as the acceleration seems really good anyway and it doesn't seem to have much lag from stand still.
Could it be re-mapped already.

Put the car into GGS mode/hi-range and accelerate - if you notice a spirited urge, compared to normal road conditions then it probably isn't mapped - but not too sure how this maps out with the new MY.
