Sliding on the m4
Morning everyone.
A weird experience happened to me on the weekend. I was travelling at 70mph (yes for real i was at the limit!) going round i guess a left hander on the m4 near Newport south wales in the early hours (cold and wet'ish) all of a sudden i get the ABS kicking in and this feeling of the whole car losing grip. Really un-nerving.
It did the same for the return again on a left hander.
This is my first Disco so expected the cornering to be interesting, but to slide/abs or at least feel a complete loss of control was scary.
Tyres = great all round - goodyear ultragrip <- the pressures were all about 27PSI tho.
Maintenance = FSH and money spent on everything (previous owner)
The only other thing that happened about an hour before was just setting off i had complete power loss + warning lights for a second then everything went back to normal.
I searched, found some threads on steering position sensor not moving, I checked this and it seems to move with the turn of the wheel, a little play but not too much that id say was static.
Im guessing most responses are "get a code reader" - But would the pressures have caused this, or is there anything else i need to look out for?
Im a pretty tame driver so cant imagine people continuing to drive these if it cant go down the M4 without sliding around....
Tyre pressures seem low especially at the rear and could cause the issue. I take it you were on Christchurch hill between the Coldra and Caerleon Road junctions.1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

yeah tyre pressures and steering angle calibration checks are a good may forward.
Did you noticed a yellow light on the dash appear briefly ?

@petek yes (i assumed) it was ABS or stability kicking in.
Im guessing i need to get it on an IID for the calibration reset?
I may try the glue trick for the sensor sleeve, does anyone know if im glueing the sleeve to the tabs or the steering shaft? I looked at the instructions but i still cant understand the glue fix.

You're jumping the gun.
Sort your low tyre pressures out first. If your SAS was defective, believe me, you'd know about it with a whole host of errors not just the stability kicking in. Mods:

Also have to ask..
For those that know the bend... Is 70mph in a D4 on that bend reasonable? There are a few posts here sometimes that are clearly asking a little too much, and the PM blames the car instead of looking closer to home.2011 MY D4 HSE

Should be able to make it. When the Tyre pressures were down on my car going around a local roundabout would flash up stability warnings and stability control would kick in. I'd start with the pressures 👍

I’ve been in a d4 at Gaydon test track...
The driver was doing in excess of 100mph when we hit a large hairpin,
I shat my pants but the car was stable, although it did lean a little
70 around a bend it should be fairly stable, mine is squiffy at rear on certain corners/speeds, almost like over steer, although it passed mot last week with no advisories, I still suspect a tired bush. But will let it develop more
I’d be looking at tyre pressures.

70MPH is perfectly ok for that bend, there are no speed restrictions advised when normally there would be. I've done the bend at a few miles an hour more than that in my youth and also done it in the snow without issue, admittedly not 70.

Thanks chaps for the replies, not sure i blamed the car more than happy to lower my speed and expectations. Its my first disco so still learning the ropes.
Im heading that way again in a couple of weeks so will be able to test, maybe at a lower speed tho.
Tyre pressures sorted, ill leave that steering sensor alone. Im going with the *if it aint broke dont mess about and actually break it* rule. I tend to do that.

Did 70 round that bend in the D3 a week ago, no issues at all
I agree, correct tyre pressure is your first avenue Iggy/Ieuan
