D3 alternator capacity

Anyone knows what capacity/output of D3 TDV6 alternator is compared to Defender TD5 ?

Will be running three batteries (main, auxiliary and another in battery box) plus two freezers on extended trips. Surely at some stage something must give ??

I run 5 batteries (main , 2 in car , 2 in trailer) and 2 fridges no problem Thumbs Up - yet Shocked

But they are all Optima yellow tops - other than the main battery - so they charge chop chop

Don’t think you need to worry, I am currently running 2 batteries in the Disco and 6 in the Conqueror (2 x 75ah and 4 x 105ah) al being charged from the D3 alternator.

Now that I am thinking of all the batteries I am pulling around I should actually provide Eskom with power Rolling with laughter

What do you power with all those batteries ? Do you have enough space left for freezers ?

Keeping the cold ones cold is first priority Wink

Seriously tough, got the 4 x 105ah batteries at a great price so I just had too.
Now I can camp for 4 days without the worry of running flat.

I bought a solar panel to assist with the long stops , because the normal type batteries (deltec) take too long to recharge . Of course then I bought the optimas which has made that a moot point

What size fits in the engine bay? Cost ? dealer ?

I "installed" the battery box in the D3 this week end. It fits very nicely between the two 2nd row seats after removing the centre seat - got this from Baben who used this space for a water container.

The box is basicaly a wolf pack with a 105a/h battery and sensor that disconnects as soon as the battery charge falls under 11V. I bolted two strips cargo rails to the floor by using two of the seats bolts on either side and the box can then be strapped down nice and tight. My Waeco fridge then fits on top of the wolf pack and is still low enough for the lid to open fully.

Interesting thing is while running this set-up with the Genesis battery manager indicates a charge of up to 14,1V whereas under normal circumstances it will only go to 13,8V - which shows that the alternator is quite happy to charge the extra load - I hope !

Ran the freezer at maximum the whole week-end and this morning the 105a/h still showed a green window (as well as the 2nd aux in the engine compartment) and freezer attained a minimum of -21deg C .

Will run the second freezer in trailer next week-end and see what happens.

My battery manger goes as high as 15.4 . Guess this is because of the Optimas lower resistance ?

Got the deltec - I normally see about 14v when it's about fully charged.

Wow - those optima's are more than twice the price of the deltec. Charge time is impressive though. capacity remains pretty much the same. I believe they are a lot tougher.

Remember that the optima can handle a 100 % discharge cycle - so in reality a 75 ah gives you more than the deltec 105 ah at only 50 % discharge

well, yes, but only if the equipment you are operating can accept 10.5v. Not sure where the low-voltage cutoff is on the fridges but I bet its about 11.5v or more

The after sales service in Oz for Optima is poor. There have been a few failures just over twelve months old and they had a lot of difficulty getting them to pay on the warranty. They are very expensive to begin with and you get vertually nothing back with the pro rata warranty when eventually decide to pay.

YMMV but on my fridge (NL) the cutoff is around 11.1 . So granted I don't get to use the full 100 % - but it still gives me more than the old deltec 105 ah - about 6 hours longer - with the much quicker recharge rate. Having said all that I wouldn't rush out to buy optimas if your deltecs are still ok . I had to buy batteries in any case - so the high cost was somewhat offset by what I would have been paying for the deltecs
