How long should it crank before firing?
Bit of an odd question but my newly acquired Discovery 3 2.7 TD HSE cranks for longer than I would expect before starting, cold it is probably around 3 seconds but warm after standing for an hour or two it still takes a couple of seconds before firing.
There isn't any white smoke worth talking about when it fires and its fairly smooth for a diesel although the response is a bit sluggish for the first mile or so which seems to be a glow plug issue but I would have expected this to also cause a cloud of smoke when it fires.
Injector values are all well within tolerances at between 900 and 1200 and the fuel pressure shows 0.4 bar on my diagnostic scanner with the ignition on before starting. Also returned 31mpg on a 650 mile round trip on hilly A roads so seems healthy otherwise.
I did wonder if the fuel pressure regulator could fail and allow the pressure in the rail to drop to zero as I understand these should hold rail pressure at 100bar, if this wasn't the case would there be a delay in starting whilst the HPFP raises pressure in the rail again?
Having not had one before I don't know if they normally start as the key is turned or if a bit of turning over first is completely normal!
Any guidance gratefully received.
Cheers, Barney

What's the CCA figure on the label of the battery that is fitted?

Sorry, I should have mentioned the battery was one of my first suspicions so it was replaced a month ago with the Exide one that is highly recommended on here with 900CCA. That has made it turn over faster but not changed the time it takes to fire.

Mine starts within the first revolution (I guess). I imagine that's how it should be.

Cold straight away to a second or two as the temp drops, hot straight away.

Thanks both, that's what I thought it should be doing. I would have thought that it would start straight away when warm even without the glow plugs working, it doesn't start instantly even if I've only left it for a few minutes although it is much faster to catch.
