Views on switching from 18" wheels to 17"?

Hi All,

I've got the opportunity to acquire a set of 17" wheels, that I'm told came off of a Disco3 that was scrapped, and I'm after thoughts on the pros and cons of moving to the slightly smaller dia - apart from the obvious that they'll go around more frequently and the tyres'll wear quicker. Anyone done this and noticed any difference in the handling etc?

The tyres will be 'taller' such that they go round pretty much exactly the same number of times any other 'correct' size wheel/tyre combination does.

So long as you've not got V8 brakes they will fit and they'll give you generally a softer, more wallowy ride due to the higher sidewall (though not all sidewalls flex the same).

I currently have 17s on my D3 HSE with the brakes changed back to standard.
I'll put the 19s or 20s back on come summer, such as it is up here, but prefer the 17s with Wintracs for winter.

As for general pros/cons for road use.
smaller rim with higher sidewall - copes better with potholes/poor roads*, less liable to tramlining (though not a problem I've ever really had in the D3), softer ride, less precise cornering, look more utilitarian/don't look as 'sharp', cheaper tyres**


* and, ahem, bouncing up kerbs
* and easier to fit yourself, if you're into that.

I preferred the 17" with slightly larger tyres, far better ride. Thumbs Up that was against 19" though. My D3 now sports Brembos so gone for 18" with larger tyres.
 Mantec sump guard.
Prospeed tree slider/steps.
Flack duel battery system.
18"Compomotive/AT3 tyres
Brembo 4pot front brakes

I entirely agree with Highlands & biskit.

When I had a D3 I downsized to 17" after about 9k miles.

I used GG AT tyres and they averaged nearly 50k miles for a set of 4, and had stacks of tread left when I changed them.

I have similarly downsized wheels on my D4.

Compared with 19” rims, I much prefer the softer ride of 17”. But the 17” wheels are not pretty Laughing They won’t turn more frequently or wear tyres out quicker either, because of the change to 70 profile, the rolling circumference will be very close, or the same as, that of standard 18”/19” tyres. Thumbs Up
 D3 owned from new, P017 brake recall, BAS FBHIC, new FBH, LR013487 oil pump, new water pump. RRS front lower suspension arms. New suspension compressor/ relay. New Denso alternator. CuNifer rear brake pipes. New GKN rear propshaft. New HPFP belt & tensioner. New A/C Condenser.NO WARRANTY for many many years.

My preferred choice is 18” rims. For my use, 17”s were just a tad to “wallowy” on corners. The biggest factor though was that I wanted to replace the discs, when they wore out, with V8 ones.

I use the original 18" wheels with road tyres (Scorpions) and have a second set of 17" for my mud tyres (KM2's). Works fine.
(Rolling diameter is the same).
