Best tyre for 20inch wheels on landmark D4

Hi all,

I was wondering if there is now - 2018 - a 'definitive' best tyre for the 20s

Primarily this is a family car and needs excellent wet weather grip and ice/snow/muddy roads (we live on a farm and the roads are always filthy with muck from tractors). I would also like some sidewall protection as my wife likes to drive the car in the hedge/ditches and we always pick up at least one terminal sidewall puncture each winter.

Does quite a lot of high speed motorway work - sub 100mph but not far sub.

I don't need super off road performance as the Defender does the hard work but equally i dont want to be embarassed in a muddy field...

With 20s is my only choice the GG AT3s or the Cooper LTz?

I am also intrigued how everyone seems to getting 30-40k from their tyres?!! I have done 37k and am through the second set of Scorpion Zeros. That and the fact that Sidewall protection is non existent makes me want to look elsewhere this time...

sage advice requested...

General Grabber GT’s might be worth a look with your motorway mileage in mind. I’m considering similar based on advise from AJS.

Sadly Cooper LTZ's have been discontinued and replaced by Cooper AT3 Sport.

Still prefer the LTZ though. Confused

I’m very happy with the 20” General Grabber GTs that I had fitted in April Thumbs Up

I’ve previously always used Pirelli Scorpion ATR but not an option for 20” rims, the GTS are an excellent alternative.

AT3 will cover all of those bases. Mine do pretty much what you say - motorways at "getting by stuff" speeds Whistle , mud and grot, snow, country roads. They've handled two trips to Les Comes and the rocky tracks there ok with just a few side wall marks. When I put the RRS in dynamic mode on TR they'll handle being chucked up a winding road quite well too.

As they've worn below half tread depth, they might be just getting a little less good on wet tarmac but no worse than any other tyre that's half worn, it seems to me. Likewise muddy grass, but then most tyres short of a full MT struggle with muddy grass.

I'll run them again or go for the Pirelli All Terrain Plus but that's not an option for you on 20s at the moment.

so its Cooper AT3s, weathermasters or GG AT3s or GTs...

all seem to do the job so its time to start looking at prices for 4 corners...

If your mileage is small & slow and your looking for a competitively priced tyre, you could always look at these.

Radar Renegade in 275/45/20 at £93 per corner (delivered).
Don't know anything about them apart from being Chinese, oh and they are out of stock at 4x4tyres.
Certainly going to check the reviews out at the time my LTZ's need replaced.

All I would say is that I have similar sized tyres and 275/45/20 give a very hard ride - you would be much better off with 255/50 or 55/20
