Balancing 275/45-20 GGAT3
Hello,
I just put a set of new 275/45-20 GGAT3:s on my D4. Rims are the LR 511. I now get vibrations at speeds above 110-115 km/h (70 mph). I have been back and they have redone the balancing but no difference. The tyre place is well known and I have been good to me in the past. Old tyres didn´t have these problems. They claim it mioght be the more "off roady" pattern that causes this. The vibrations get better with more pressure in the tyres but not perfect. The weights used are the glue on type on the inside of the rims and they have been using quite a number of them as well.
Would it be expected to get some vibrations with AT tyres or are they known to be difficult to balance? Would it be better to let them put weights on the outside as well? Other tricks?
All ideas are aprreciated!

Might not help much, but I have same tyre in same size on my full fat and the fitters never mentioned excess weights, in fact doesn't look like many on mine, no vibration but I do run them quite hard, 41 psi might make a difference.Just remember:-

Are they balancing them on both sides of the wheel? As in the face and the rear?
I had the excuse of tread pattern when a garage couldn't balance my Duratracs and they vibrated at 60mph.
I took them to another tyre fitter, they told me they needed balancing on both side of the wheels, did it, and they didn't shake at over 100mph. It was like driving on glass. 2014 D4 XS

Thanks for your replies! I have 40-41 psi in the tyres already so I don´t really want to go higher. Tyres are only balanced on the inside of the rims. That was one of my thoughts to tell them to use the front of the wheel as well. Interesting that it worked for you James.

If these are the Offending items
They are not suitable for exterior clip weights interior only so
Are the sticky weights near the valve ?
Rotate tyre 180 degs re balance using stickies on the inner internal & clip weight in outer edges (nearest the strut )

Tyres are now balanced again. Tyre Company claims they were fine but agreed to redo them and they are now better.

GG AT3's
Yesterday I fitted 4 GG AT3's in 275/45/20s to my D3. A well made robust, if a tad heavy tyre.
Pressured to 40 psi all round,
what a transformation to the ride and handling!
No vibration up to the legal 110 mph limit which is no doubt due to the excellent fitting and balancing by Dalcross tyres in Cardiff. All weights were applied on the inner rim.
Surprisingly very quiet on the motorway.
Better turn in due to the increased tyre wall stiffness over the cheap and cheerless Chinese predecessors.
Better grip on the green lane leading to madams stable.
No slip on the gravel bits up the steep hill, no spray of stones and mud down the side of the vehicle either.
Rides the bumps and pot holes really well despite the low profile.
Should also be better towing the boat to the sea edge due to the side lugs and better tread blocks.
Euro Ice rated to boot!
Okay, they are not BF Goodrich AT3's which I would have preferred but there are no 20 inch viable BFG options available, but all in all, gg AT3's are the best mid priced chunky around in my humble opinion.RR classic, dead in Ireland,

Hi Tony. Just Gauging opinion as I would like the same tyre as you have here. Any drawbacks so far and are you as happy with them now as in Summer? They seem like the best all round. I had duratracs before but was disappointed on frosty roads as did not seem particularly sure footed. Thanks John.D4 HSE Luxury

Had my new GGAT3s fitted a few months back.
Running at std pressures and absolutely no issues with them.
(all you might get is an initial 'notchiness' as the new tread blocks "bed in" for the first 100 mikes or so).
Key is for the wheels/tyres to be balanced accurately and wheels torqued up correctly and ran at correct pressures....... always on the road less travelled 🚧

Good to hear and I see from searching that you have good experience on differing tyre sizes Ron. Are the tyres you refer to here the 275/45-20? It time I bit the bullet - been tossing up these or cooper weathermaster in standard size but if you need off road ability on the odd occasion you need it. D4 HSE Luxury

Pope,
no issues with the gg on frost or in Brecon snow, on and off road.
Great launching the boat from a wet sandy beach. No issues driving through soft dunes on the way back to the road either.
Coincidentally madam just ripped the side wall out of one on a low wall Hardly any wear after 16,000 miles.
Ordered in a replacement and hope to fit asap.

285/50/20 tyres are possible but needs stops in the steering rack to stop "lock to lock" rubbing...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

I only have the H rated ones.
I accept the v rated are for higher speeds but not venturing much above the legal limit too often, and not knowing a lot about tyres, what's the difference please?RR classic, dead in Ireland,

There's nothing wrong with the H ones, but difference is -
Speed: H - 130mph, V - 159mph.
Wet: H - E classification, V - C classification.
So if price is the same, I'd go for the V (as I have done).
But if you're running H, then it's still a great tyre. ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

Great info all thank you. Had a response from Cooper that they don’t recommend their Weathermaster off road at all and not for mud etc. I know the D4 is capable but don’t want to hobble it if I need to be off road. GGat 3 it is and hopefully can give some feedback against Duratrac once been on a while. Thanks again.D4 HSE Luxury
