REAR PROP GONE AT 30K MILES |
|
in for MOT and service today to be told rear prop has failed on the centre bush/bearing...the cars only done 30k miles since new....you would think landrover would know how to make a decent prop after all this time.

all 3 of mine lasted over 150k each but there seem to be a lot of complaints on the later D4s dont know if there was a supplier change late in the D4 lifecycle.. Must stop buying shiny toys....

Cost saving exercise somewhere will have backfired.
Will be interesting to see if people with GKN replacements start getting early failures or if it just plagues 15/16 D4 factory fitted ones Must stop buying shiny toys....

I had no symptoms whatsoever. The split was picked up during a 5th year LR service. Independent confirmed a split about 2 inches. I had a warranty so went ahead. Indi with GKN part was literally half the LR cost.
He showed me another he’d just done on a Range Rover. Split all the way round. Although the part starts failing early it perhaps doesn’t get picked up for sometime on some cars so there may be a spread of mileages. I don’t think that would account for getting 140k miles out of it though.
Been trying to work out what the cause was, whether anything to do with driving style. Never been off road or abused, so not sure. Gary

Mine went at 25K FFS ..... clearly there is an early life failure issue here.... with LR using cheapest components it seems....
Said as much at the time and got it done under 'good will' without having to go through WD - so a result - but doesn't say much for the quality and robustness of LR components.... sadly 2016MY Discovery HSE - Black

None of my previous five D3's & 4's have suffered a failed prop, but this one (2016) did at about 60k just before it's 3rd birthday so replaced under warranty.
No symptoms at all, just picked up at first MOT. Long succession of Disco's since 2001...
SIII Lightweight - neglected & rusting. Bulkhead, A panels, vent panel & outriggers now disintegrated - Next years project!

My D4 is on 54k and split in the bearing as an advisory on latest MOT. Just pricing up parts as need front lower arms doing as well. D4 MY15 SE TECH

The consensus on here is that a GKN replacement is the one to go for.
From what I read the removal of old and installation of new is relatively simple if you have the right place to do the work.
Good luck. Gary

When I replaced the Prop on the D3 it took about 60 /90 minutes from start to finish. a reasonably simple job considering it's a Land Rover!
Bought the GKN replacement from Advance factors

27,800 told mine had gone at service. Can I just ask as see people say about the mot picking it up is this an mot item as I thought the bearing could not be seen unless you move the heat shield and I thought they did not remove any covers for mot. The reason I ask is mine was mot and passed with no advisories then couple of days later it had its service only to be told it had gone. Just wondering really
