ECU Info - IID Tool

Hello,

I've been busy playing with my new toy this afternoon & have to say i'm impressed with the level of detail I can interrogate the vehicle for.

I was interested to see the results form the ECU Info report I ran. It stated a number of ECU's have updates available for them. I presume it references this directly back to Gap / BAS.

My question is which might be an obvious one, If I buy a ECU update from Gap / BAS will it cover all the updates the IID Tool states in one or will I need to buy multiple updates to cover each ECU?

I also see in the manual that possibly some of the ECU updates may be available to me now through the ECU flash section of the tool. I've not ventured into this section yet!

How do i know which I need to purchase & which are already available to me?

Here is the list of updates The vehicle has available for it.

The only one you need to pay for is if you havea BAS remap file, all other updates that are available are on the tool, but read up on using the tool to flash your ECU's before attempting to do any.

Mick, I might be wrong but, I thought ECU updates (other than compressor) were chargeable unless on a pro tool.

My understanding is the same as Tayaste's. Unless you have a Pro Tool and pay the annual subscription, then all the ECU updates are chargeable. Your best bet is to email Pat at GAP.

As has been said many times on the forum, ECU updates are not like your usual Windows Updates. The general advice seems to be that unless you've got a specific problem, then updating ECUs doesn't seem like a good idea Thumbs Up

Thanks guys,

I'll pick a couple of less important looking updates & have a look in the tool to see if they are available to update in the flash section. If not, I guess it's a chargeable update. What wasn't clear to me on the GAP site was if one charge covered all the ECU updates but as a single one off update or if it was a charge for each ECU you wished to update.

If I can't work it out i'll drop Pat a line to see what's what.

Thanks for the heads up on the ECU flashing risks Flack, already considering how to ensure I have enough backup power should I consider a flash although it does have a new EA1000 in it.

Is there away way to find out what the updates address? As it is, the vehicle starts & everything works but if aren't working as they should or could be improved i wouldn't know. Knowing what the update addresses would at least allow informed choice whether to update or leave as is.

Life was simpler not having all this extra information to hand Smile

Hi Guys

When it comes to the regular and IIDTool BT (Bluetooth), the following ECU updates are available for the D3:

-Suspension ECU for compressor replacement with AMK or updating with the latest firmware which has improvements to prolong compressor life.
-Bluetooth/Cell Phone, fixes pairing issues with later phones. Language change
-Instrument pack for clock on dash viewing (2004-2006)
-Navigation for destination entry while on the move
-Body Control to enable 3 turn flash (lane changing flash... 2004-2006)

They are all detailed in the ECU Flash section of the user manual:

https://www.gap-diagnostic.com/support/documents/IIDTool/

These pretty much cover the D3/LR3 and RRS up to 2009 since other ECU updates have proven to give less, and sometimes no improvements. There are, however, two exceptions which are the transmission and transfer case. Transmission one helps fix the California stop issue while the transfer case helps with a loose in the drivetrain type issue. These are available via our fast lane service (25 GBP each to cover manual selection of the proper file). Of course, all other ECU files can be obtained via the fast lane service if required.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Cheers Pat

Thanks for the detailed reply. I guess as I already have the Cod, 3 flash and sat on the move enabled it explains why it shows as an update to the standard.

I'm interested to learn more about the engine, transfer box and transmission updates though.

What's the california stop for the transmission for example?

Thanks

You're welcome.

Engine is rarely updated since stable and most updates are for enhanced power via a BAS tune.

Transfer case shall be left alone unless you are trying to fix a drivetrain issue.

The California stop symptoms manifest themselves when reducing speed when entering a roundabout and not stopping the vehicle completely. Giving it gas will produce a thump which can be quite significant in some cases. Updating the transmission helps since they have revised algorithms to provide smoother shifting thus eliminating this issue. There is, however, a risk associated with working on a transmission when they are worn out.

Cheers

Great information.

Helped me put things into perspective and not get over excited about updating everything. Although Dudleydisco did warn not to be to hasty in applying updates.

The california stop is an interesting one as I do get that symptom but the box is showing signs of wear at 135k miles.

I'll have to give it consideration and give you a shout if I want to go for the update

Thank again for the info Pat

Cheers

I have done 50 miles since applying the California stop reflash and have to say it really is like driving a different car, I was seriously considering getting rid as it really was starting to bug me big time.

Glad it helped.

We've updated ours a few years ago which had 120 k Miles on it at the time. We had similar results, it changed the behaviour dramatically. Of course, adaptations have to be relearned but once they are done, it’s quite an improvement.
