Understanding "phone mode" and a fitted phone |

So had Phone Mode on and off for years now. Apart from a brief working period after trying the "pull fuse 52/53" trick, it has been stuck for well over a year. I have tried all the usual things, hard reset, MOST cable, fuses, etc. I have replaced the battery during this time and charge is currently excellent so no problem with voltage. I have also repeatedly pressed the phone button on the head unit and a every button on the steering wheel but no change.
A possible cause could be down to water ingress through a poorly fitted windscreen replacement (unfortunately autoglass warranty isn't transferable between owners). Doesn't happen every time it rains but when it does, the water comes in right in the top middle above the rear view mirror and drips into the cubby hole area (don't have sat nav) but has sometimes dripped onto the front of the head unit. I have had the whole unit out, disconnected and cleaned all connections, and had a good look through the top grill but couldn't see any sign of corrosion.
Mine has a physical phone kit fitted and Bluetooth. I obviously don't use the kit and have tried all the above with Bluetooth on my phone turned off so it doesn't trigger any attempts to connect.
So that is my situation. What I would like to understand is how all these things are connected to help diagnose the problem.
For example does the radio head unit connect to separate modules for both Bluetooth and the physical phone connection? I don't care about the phone kit but would like to keep Bluetooth so happy to permanently disconnect the phone kit if that is possible. Pin 10?
Could any of the buttons on the head unit or steering wheel be damaged and creating a short that would cause Phone Mode?
Also, when is Phone Mode the expected behaviour in normal working conditions? Does it come on when you are connected or connecting to a call via Bluetooth, the physical connection or both?
If things go right to the wire and I need to open up the head unit, what happens if I cattle truck the whole thing? Does anything else rely on it or should everything else in the car work (until I can get a replacement).
I appreciate that is a lot of questions but basically I am just trying to get a better understanding off all the different parts/modules involved so I can better diagnose the problem and hopefully others can find one definitive breakdown of the issue.

I think there is a wire on the small plug you could do with cutting.
See if it helps.

Is that this pin 10? What does that connect to? The physical phone connector or Bluetooth module or is it the same connection for both?

Looking at https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/stereo-stuc...phone+mode it suggests pin 10 is for the aftermarket phone kit? I assume this is what I have installed in the cubby between the front seats. If so, happy to cut that wire as long as that doesn't affect the steering wheel buttons.

Hmm, I've found the Cellular Phone section of the workshop manual. Looks like the nokia phone adaptors go through the Transceiver Module before communicating with the IHU over MOST. So no hard wired connection involved.
Maybe pin 10 only relates (as mentioned in some places) to aftermarket phone kits rather than the LR nokia kits.
I'd still like to remove the kit but looks like I would have to identify which wires going to the TM are from the kit. If I can do that, I'll remove/cut them and I guess change to "No phone fitted" via IID? Unless that setting relates to Bluetooth also? BTW discovered the Bluetooth is also part of the TM as is Voice Recognition.

try cutting pin 10 Mute (on small connector)
leaving enough cable either side to rejoin with bullet crimp.

I'll take a look tonight when I get back. I suspect my pin 10 will be empty if the workshop manual is correct as it doesn't get a mention in either the cellular phone or audio sections (other than showing pin 10 as not used). If it is indeed connected, I'll do as you suggest and chop the wire with enough slack either side to make reconnecting easy.

pin 10 is not used on the factory kit ..only on the aftermarket kit
if you don't want the phone kit just turn it off with the IID tool G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

Thanks for confirming that wiggs. I have already done that but wasn't sure if some short in the wiring could still cause the permanent Phone Mode. Thus wondering if I should disconnect it completely from the Transceiver Module.

even ppl without the phone kits have this problem!
I think you need to be looking more at the head unit!
But unplugging the phone module would narrow the problem down I guess

Agreed, and yep, that's my thinking. Just want to eliminate all other possible causes like fitted kit, steering wheel buttons, etc before likely having to admit it is the head unit that is probably cattled!
On a side note, if it does turn out to be the IHU and I have to fork out £200 - 300 for a used replacement, I may as well consider some of these aftermarket radio/touch screen solutions I see everywhere. What happens with the MOST connection in those cases? I imagine these aftermarket solutions don't have any way of connecting/communicating on MOST.

before you bin the head unit, connect pin 10 (mute) to the + power cable (blue/purple), to see if that helps it not going into phone mode
(assuming not other wires connected to pin 10!)
