Hoovering/Humming Noise!?
Quick question: My D4 (my10) is making an odd noise that even my local Indy can’t identify. The minute you pull away there is what can only be described as a distant noise that sounds like someone hoovering with the occasional metallic rattle. It doesn’t increase with speed and stops completely when you come to a stop, if I lift off the brake it starts even before I accelerate. It also seems to get louder (at slow speed) when turn the steering wheel to the right.
Any ideas before I booked it in, Indy suggested may be a heat shield rattling...
Car drives perfectly by the way

Quick update - it is still making the noise (which you may describe as humming rather than hoovering) but now I have noticed its worse when I use hard left or right lock and then, sometimes, stops for 5-6 miles and slowly creeps back. Also, it doesn't do it when going backwards...?
Proper stumped, especially as the Independent (Tim Fry LR in Cheltenham) couldn't identify it
Suggestions so far from a FaceBook post:
Torque Convertor (although doesn't increase with speed)?
Heat Sheild rattling?
Diff noise (although doesn't increase with speed)?
Tyre guys jacked it up on Compressor Cover (recently changed the rears)?
Any advice would be well received and much appreciated!

I would think this should be you're first port of call, as its unlikely no damage was done!yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

I think a heat shield would really rattle rather than hum. At least the heat shields I’ve had loose have rattled when driving over potholes or uneven ground - not while driving normally and especially not constantly. They’ve also been VERY obvious when the car is raised and usually you can feel them with your hands whether they move or not.

What wasn’t on your list but might be plausible is a wheel bearing. It’s not necessarily always a grinding noise.

Did to do it before new tyres where fitted? what tyres have you fitted? It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

My 2010 D4 also had a very distant humming noise, something which I really had to listen for and if I turned the radio on you certainly couldn’t here it. I also couldn’t hear it at idle, just when I initially pulled away and by 10mph it was drowned out or gone.
Given the noise was so easy to not notice I ignored it, but about a month later I started to get normal ride height only messages if I changed the ride height. My independent initially could get any error codes from it so was reluctant to change the compressor, but a few weeks later the message was constant and last month a new compressor was fitted.
Unfortunately, this coincided with having to return my licence, but on the few journeys I have made as a passenger it seems to have fixed the noise. Whilst I wouldn’t perhaps have thought this was your problem, given what you said about the tyre fitters, I would definitely want to have your compressor looked at, as even if it is fine, they may have dislodged something that is now making a noise.Andy

Pulling the compressor fuse should help rule it in/out.
