Hi, any advice please on changing glow plugs? Have heard they can be a nightmare to get out. I’m a fairly competent minded person, but a bit worried in case it all goes wrong. Car has done 160000 miles and is a bit of a rough starter when very cold.

Your brave taking this on.
Had mine changed back in April. Took it to Alltrack 4x4 as they have the specialised kit and experience needed to extract them if needed. As it happens all 6 came out ok, which was a miracle

I was told don’t bother changing them and make sure your fbh is working. It seems to have worked for me. Good luck anyway The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;
They just make the best of everything they have.

As all 6 came out clean. It cost £260.
If any snap then it's time spent per plug. Need to budget £1000 really

Rough starting at what ambient temperature?
Only if you need to start the car with frost on the windscreen would I suggest you touch them!!!

Hi I had my plugs changed at my local Indy before the bad weather as she would sometimes refuse to start, well 2 came out 4 snapped!!! So they had to partly strip the engine to expose the snapped plugs and then a guy came to drill out the remainder. So all in all it took about a week and cost just over £900 !!!!

Reminds me, I need to get mine booked in before too long. Done my research and found a good company to do the job. Quoted between £400 and £2500
I know which one I'm hoping for.

It was well below freezing, it seemed to missing on a couple of cylinders for a few seconds on starting. Sounds like the horror stories are true!

Most of yours must be working.

Take your time gradually working on the plugs with penetrating oil and long gaps between applying oil and working on the plugs. Once they start moving just flood with oil and then screw back in and wait. Mine started with perhaps 1/32 of a turn. Three days later I was able to unscrew them fully. I used Kroil as the penetrating oil. It’s expensive but seemed to work. Use a decent glow plug removal socket with a swivel head.
The above may sound like a success story - however I have still not managed to remove them!! I am contemplating handing it over to a local garage that I trust. I have done the time consuming part, hopefully they can now pull them out. 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

Does it that mean that the tips can stick as much as the threads?

Coke is the bigger problem. It's not the tips though as they are small.
It's the whole shaft. About 10cm! Plastered in carbon. Add the fact that the glowplugs aren't straight, no chance!
If you have it past the threads I found pouring paint thinners down helped free them.
