On a D3 your issue could be the little speaker on the back of the instrument cluster having gone pop, especially if you'd also lost your indicator 'ticking'.
I'm not sure if the same is true of a D4.
If it's the same then a £3 replacement from RS can be soldered in place instead of paying LR £1000 for a replacement cluster and programming it to the vehicle.
I did my D3 several years ago using information on here, try making a cuppa and then searching for speaker.
