| sticky headlight xenon flap |
|
Hi,
my 2008 Disco 3 has some issues with the xenon headlight.
Going from low beam to full beam and back the flap doesn't close sometimes to low beam.
This must be something inside the xenon part.
Has anyone got the same issues and solved it?
Would be nice to get all information on this.

Have you had the lights fitted recently, I did have this problem some time before my old D3 was updated with the "Xenon light fitted" setting to stop the startup flicker effect, the problem went when this was changed in the Configuration Must stop buying shiny toys....

A work around could be to cut the wire to the flap. Then the halogen would still work

I'm new to such cars, I bought mine some weeks ago, so I don't know how long this issue happens.
It's a HSE so probably has got Xenon since his/her birthday

It was quite a common issue back in the day. My 08 D3 had the same. It was intermittent and eventually the headlamp was replaced under warranty. I’m not sure it’s a repairable item. It is just a sticky flap inside the headlamp, but it’s sealed up.

oh shi....
what's the very best plan for solving this
1. buying used headlights
2. deactivating xenon flap and using halogen only for high beam
3. switching to LED headlights

Mine would do this every so often.
I would work it free again by hitting the full beams a few times, get out and give the sticking light a thump.
Which knocked it back down.
Repeat till the lights work fine.
Not graceful but if done regularly, it helped.
My other way around was fitting upgraded bulbs and adjusted the light beam up a touch to give much better visibility. Then I didn’t have to use the full beams.

By putting the whole lamp in a oven for a few minutes to heat it up the “glass” can be removed to give access to the flap to free it off and lubricate, don’t reheat it and seal it until you are satisfied it is working, you could also remove the orange reflectors (detango) while your at it

Brings back memories of heating up Xenon lights on the living room floor and peeling them open - taking out the orange plastic and resealing them for eBay

Was going to mention taking the unit apart, as it can be done with either an oven or a hot air gun to get inside the unit. As it has been working correctly in the past could be that the shutter mechanism has got corrosion inside or dirt and has too much friction to operate correctly.
By removing the headlamp front lens reflector and bulb you should be able to get access to the actual shutter to see if it can be lubricated. Will need to be lubricated with something suitable for the high temperature in there. Must stop buying shiny toys....

that helped, it was only the left one and a smooth touch on the lamp housing is enough, maybe I have to do this some times before opening the whole thing.

I have a set of Osram Night breakers fitted.
Previous ones were Osram Cool blue intense ones.
Both are excellent and worth the price.
