Couple of issues - need some advice |
|
Hi All,
I'm having a few issues, so could do with bit of advice. I'll list below!
First Issue - I've noticed a loud humming noise (sounds almost like a an airplane) when driving. It is coming from the front of the car. I can really hear it on the motorway when i take my foot of the accelerator pedal. It also causes a vibration i can feel through the steering wheel. However, the noise and vibration reduces a lot if i put the car into neutral.
At first I thought it was the passenger wheel bearing, as there was a bit of give in it. So i had that replaced, but its still there.
I also changed the oil in the front diff, and it was quite bad. The magnetic sump plug had quite a significant amount of chaff stuck to it.
The gearbox and TC were replaced around 10 months ago, so i shouldn't think its that.
Any more ideas before i go down path of front diff replacement?
Second issue:
At low speeds when i brake slightly, i can feel a 'clunk' from the front, i think its drivers side.
Could it be a drop link maybe?
Third Issue:
I can hear a 'hissing' noise at low speeds mainly, when i lift off accelerator. I do think i've got a bit of power loss before 2k revs. I've looked into it and i dont think its the EGR's as they have been blanked off a while ago.
I replaced the intercooler pipe and cleaned out the MAF sensor (was still relatively clean from when i did it a year or two ago). I also cleaned out intake manifold (I think?) where the EGR's are blanked.
Any ideas?
Thanks for any help you can all provide.
Car has done 178k btw.

Hi,
The first issue does sound like a wheel bearing so it would definitely worth checking the other side.
They don't always show much movement but do make a horrible noise.
The first time I had one go I thought the transmission was on the way out!
Front diff is a possible cause but check the other wheel bearing first.
The clunk when braking is most likely to be the front lower arm bushes.
If not it could be ARB bushes or drop links.
There is plenty of info about them on here if you have a search.
Not sure about the hissing noise but would check all the hoses followed by having a look at the cross over pipe.
Hope this helps D4 2016 Landmark, Waitomo Grey.
D3 2005 HSE, Bonatti Grey, now sold but still comes back for servicing.
Defender 2002 Td5 Commercial, had a hard life but slowly being restored.
I only work so I can afford to repair my Land Rovers!
