Engine Cutting out whilst driving (2012 SDV6)
Wife was driving the car yesterday on a dual carriageway and it suddenly started juddering and the red triangle came on and it went into limp mode. She managed to pull over safely and stop the engine.
Turning it back on only the amber warning light came on and the engine wasn't making any funny noises (I was on the phone with her by this point).
Turning it off again and leaving it a while before turning it back on and there were no warnings. She then successfully drove it home without any issue and did go above 50mph for certain periods of time.
Just happened again today but at a lower speed but this time the engine totally cut out with warning lights on and "gearbox fault" displayed.
Restarting the engine after a while and the wife was able to drive off again with no errors/warnings.
Any ideas what this could be? I have a fault code reader arriving today and I'll post the codes.
I also have it booked into LR for Thursday but they're charging £180 just to look at it. I have a feeling this is going to be a costly repair and typically the warranty only expired end of Jan.
Had it just been filled up ? or any work done on the car ? filters changed ?

Friend of mine was on trip to France and suffered the juddering thing.
He had it recovered before he went to the ferry.
Just got it back today and it was some wires in the fuel tank that had chaffed or worn out.
Tank out and repaired along with fuel gauge sender (or sensor?).

CAM position sensor? Had it on my 2012, would be driving along and then get a random judder, it finally let go and I ground to a halt. Was just a sensor that needed replacing.
Could be entirely wrong but sounds similar to what I had MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten
MY12 HSE - Gone
MY16 HSE Luxury - Sold
MY20 D5 HSE - Sold

Nope. Filled up over the weekend and driving over 150 miles since then (mostly motorway). No work done (last service last Dec).

I should add that it has happened again and wife is currently waiting for RAC to come out. This time (and the previous apparently) no juddering involved.
Also, on this occasion with no warning the car just total cut out with no warnings lights. Power steering went, gear shift went down, radio went off etc. Took a few attempts before the car would restart.
The wife also mentioned that she had a couple of times recently where she started it up on the drive and put it in D but was actually in R. Could be totally unrelated.

Similar happened to me going over Shap in a D3, engine cut out and I managed to dead stick it to the hard shoulder from lane 2. Wouldn’t start, waited an our in sub zero temps for RAC contractor then she just started, laughing at me. This was in the days before IIDs so no ideal re codes. Sold it a few weeks later as it was SWMBO’s car and she decided she wasn’t going to drive it again.

Crank sensor trigger is a known issue...
Thanks for that pointer. Just been reading through the threads on that and it sounds similar based on the last two failures.
Looks like the VIN is on the Technical Bulletin but not the recall notice. If this turns out to be the issue are they still liable to fix it? As we've had the car for over 3 years, bought it from a dealer and had it serviced by a dealer every year I'm surprised that they haven't done anything proactively about it?

Well the RAC were useless. After a 5 hour wait they sent a contractor who had just been instructed to tow the car to the dealer. They didn't even bother to tell us that they weren't sending someone to see if there was anything they could do.
The guy did have a basic fault code reader though and it came up with $7E8 and $7E9 but sounds like they are generic codes so not particularly helpful. Will have to wait and see what the dealer says tomorrow.

So it did turn out to be the crank shaft sensor.

I had this on my Disco 4. Kept happening and the garage couldn’t find anything on the fault finder for ages. Eventually found to be the throttle housing, or that what I think they called it. It was replaced and the fault went away. Mine did everything that you have reported.Deno

I am pretty certain that Landrover issued an official recall for this fault, mainly MY12 affected.
Not sure dealer should of charged anything for rectification.D4 Landmark MY16 Santorini Black THE LAST

My D4 was on a 59 plate and I was not charged. The engine stuttering became very violent in the end and if I remember correctly the throttle housing was cracked. Never had a problem afterwards.Deno
