Seat belts and MOT
Hi All,
I have just caught my seat belt in the door whilst shutting as it hadn't retracted fully before I closed the door on it There is now a slight snag in the belt and I'm wondering if this is an MOT failure as mine is coming up soon.

Don’t think it would be a fail, might be an advisory. I guess it depends how badly damaged it is.

It used to be that a bit of minor damage was OK - it would only fail if in the tester’s opinion it was “cut or damaged sufficient to obstruct correct operation of the belt or significantly weaken the webbing”.
The new rules just say it’s a major fault if it is “missing or damaged”. That doesn’t seem to encourage common sense, so taking it to a garage you trust for the MOT seems be the best idea!

Cig lighter warm it up and smooth it out.
As you have caught it the, belt is probably not retracting properly and will want a strip and lube up to help it run home, I took off my B pillar trim to do this, but another guy replied he just pulled the belt out and sprayed it with hairspray which apparently worked just as well.

Any time I’ve had trouble with a safety belt not retracting/stiff unreeling etc before the MOT buckle it up and they always just look at it and don’t touch it.

i was going to suggest whipping out the seat for the MOT, but then realised that that's the one seat that can't be whipped out.
Most useful (well for me with no middle or rear seats and back row seat belts disconnected and one end in the last pannier box) if there's no seat fitted then the belt is not a seat belt. Simples.
