Drive without front prop fitted
Bit of a question
Trying to track down a front end drumming my thoughts are
Front prop
Front diff
Drive shaft
If I take the front prop off to inspect it and it's knackered can I still drive whilst I order a new one
The drumming starts at about 30ish and gets stronger the faster you go and sounds worse when under throttle but still there when throttle is off
I've not long replaced discs bearings and arms and just had the tracking done so pretty much eliminates those as the cause
Any help please All transmission oil replaced
3 flash indicators
All timing belts changed
EPB serviced
De cat fitted
Wind deflectors
De-tango done
Tints fitted

This has come up before and I am fairly certain you cannot drive without the prop, as the centre diff wont lock unless wheels slipping .

But with the prop removed it will assume the wheels are slipping?Disco4 MY16 SDV6 Landmark Black

Didn’t AndrewS do something similar all the way back from Morocco after a half shaft (I think) failed?

It won't assume the wheels are spinning, that info comes from the wheel sensors.Richard

I would have thought that putting the TR into Rock Crawl which locks the centre diff you could drive the vehicle without a front drive shaft - however you would have to put up with the other aspects of being in Rock Crawl like being in low range etc.

That would be my thoughts.
Is there anything on the transfer box to tell the speed of the front prop?
When I first got my D3 back in 2015 I had a similar problem and the mechanic ( I use that term loosely ) tried this and when he put it in gear (auto box) it did not move, lights came up on the dash as i remember but it defiantly did not move This was with front prop removed The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;

Sand mode locks the centre diff and away you go!
Put the satnav screen in off road and you will have a view of what the suspension is doing including the center diff It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Had a front cv failure. Removed the driveshaft, in planes of driving it home. Had read about the sandmode difflocking.
The car drove of, maybe 500-1000meters, then the diff started slipping. Restarted the car, same thing all over. Also tried rock mode, low range etc.
Either my center diff is , or they are supposed to do this.

Checked the front drive shafts today
No play in them only a little up and down movement as expected but no play and no clonking
So looking now at front prop or diff
Yes we are getting there step by step
