Clicking noise on cold start |
|
Hi All,
A few times, i've noticed that on a cold start and just leaving the car to idle (so no throttle applied at all) - after a minute or so, there is a clicking noise coming from what seems like the front offside (only really hear it from outside or with the window open).
It kind of sounds like something (butterfly valve) opening and closing at a 1 second interval. The noise is very similar to my old D3 when it actuated the turbo lever as a preventative (cool down i think action) - but that kind of noise.
If i give the car a bit of throttle, the clicking stops and doesn't start again (still cold). Its not an oil pressure noise, very much something opening and closing.
Is that normal on the 3.0L engine?
No other issues, everything else is spot on and runs very well - just want to know if the clicking is normal.
Thanks, Mike.

Mine doesn’t do it, could be the aux belt tensioner, or even a damaged aux belt. Has the aux belt been changed? It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Good suggestion M3DPO, not sure on the belt, but i'll have a look and see if the tensioner is bouncing next time it does it. Thanks.

Pour a small amount of water on the tensioner and see if it still does it, check the belt for damage as damage in one place on the belt can cause it. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Did a little more investigation today.
Aux belt looks good (as far as i can see - didn't take it off) and water on the tensioner (or actually any of the front pulleys) doesn't stop the clicking.
A few things i've noticed,
Cold start, no throttle - just leave to idle.
After about 2~3 minutes, the clicking starts (quiet, but there).
if i turn the engine off and re-start - after 10 or 20 seconds - starts clicking again.
The frequency doesn't change with revs (so its not a rotating part).
After another minute or 2, it just stops.
When warm - doesn't do it at all and its fairly quiet - cant hear it with the windows closed.
From the above, i'm still assuming its a valve/butterfly/solenoid type thing that is opening and closing at a constant rate (irrespective of revs) - but only for a short period until a certain temperature is reached (just slightly warm rather than hot). I think if i just got in and drove off, i'd never hear/notice it or probably the engine would get past the "warm" point before i next stopped and left it idling.
Really difficult to pin point where its coming from - with the engine cover off - sort of top centre.
Is there anything in the throttle body that might do this (just because its top centre) or EGR's. Listening with a piece of wood against my ear doesn't help, too many other noises come through.
