I’ve read it before as well, but think that someone had found a late 90’s Ford, with a chassis and then simply made something up!
I’d not believe it without supporting evidence...2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Re: What american car/suv is the D3 chassis based on?

I read the answer only the other day and have forgotten it already!
I don't think it was a copy of any American design but as the Ford engineering team may have worked on several other chassis designs before (and after) the finalisation of the D3/4 chassis I believe there could be similarities.

* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)

It was a specific design AFAIK nothing technically similar had been constructed before., other than the fact that it looks like a ladder frame
And, it’s hard to avoid the issue of lardiness but let’s blame Ford shall we? No, that’s not fair: the American firm’s T5 platform is ancient and was adapted by Land Rover from its role as the basis for the long discontinued separate chassis U251 series Ford Explorer. Given that background, it’s incredible how capable the L319 Discovery remains. Expect the L462 replacement model to lose a lot of weight due to it being based upon a version of the JLR aluminium architecture used for the Range Rover and Sport.

I seem to remember at the time before launch of the D3 a Ford Explorer platform was being used for development of the new D3. However it was rumored it kept popping shock absorbers through the chassis and was scrapped.D4 Landmark MY16 Santorini Black THE LAST

I was working in the Premier Automotive Group of Ford at the time for Aston Martin and I'd just changed over from Aston to Land Rover. I remember seeing the early prototypes and the chassis on them and there is nothing from any American car. I think they would have taken the technology back to the US as they liked to use the Premier Automotive Group companies as technology leaders for Ford Products. The Aston Martin DB9 had the first automotive use of an OLED display before anyone else took it on board.

I also was at LR during this time and Explorer Chassis were looked at but eventually the chassis was a bespoke one for both L319 discovery and L320 RR Sport. Produced by Joint venture between GKN & DANA . We also looked at Robert Bosch in Clarkesville who made the Explorer front Knuckles but again ended up sourced in UK.
