Stereo keeps resetting itself!
Hi there,
I bought a 55 plate D3 HSE about a month ago and for the first few weeks everything was great however it's now developed a couple of annoying faults that just seem to be getting worse. A suspension fault (another topic ) and a stereo fault. Whilst driving along my stereo keeps resetting itself, one minute everything's fine the next the stereo turns off, the sat nav screen reboots, the cd multi changer starts cycling and the clock resets itself to 00:00. All this happens by itself and without me pressing any buttons it also doesn't really matter if I'm traveling along a rough or smooth road it just does it at the most random times. Yesterday was the worst day yet with the audio system resetting itself 6-7 times in a 30min trip.
Today the disco has decided to ramp things up further by refusing to switch off the audio system at the end of each journey I took when the keys were removed from the ignition. Paranoid that the battery would run flat if I left it with the stereo on I watched for a couple of minutes to see if it would switch off. Sure enough after 5min the stereo crashed and reset itself as above!
Has anyone come across this problem before and if so whats the fix (I'm guessing its an expensive one ) I have had a look on this site but can't find a definitive answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Cheers for the heads up narpy, gave the battery terminals a wiggle around last night and low and behold the positive terminal moved. Wouldn't say it was so loose that it would have come off but it moved nevertheless. Have now tightened the offending terminal and have my fingers crossed this will fix my audio issues. Thanks for your help.

****update****
I've been working away for a while so haven't had a chance to post an update but the wife's been driving the disco and it seems the problems are escalating. On the advice of another forum member I carried out a hard reset and then refitted my battery terminals securely. For a couple of weeks things seemed to have improved to the point where I was having maybe one reset a week but this hasn't lasted. Over the last few weeks the stereo has been resetting itself every trip sometimes 2/3 times. In the last week I've had to pull the fuse to turn the stereo off when I've finished my trip as it won't turn off with the keys out and I have no control whatsoever over it. Yesterday I got in the car and went to drive off I realised I had no sound coming from the stereo, all other controls worked fine but I had no sound (again another fuse pulling exercise was required!) and today to complete the full house of stereo problems I got the "low battery" warning on the stereo. I don't know what is going on but it's getting rather annoying now. Has anyone had the same sort of problems? Is it worth me looking for a replacment head unit/amp/sat nav screen??? I don't know where to start really.

What types of journeys are you and your other half doing?
If lots of short trips, get the battery charged, and a diagnostics check done. (In that order.)flickr

Probably 2-3 40mile round trips a week the rest are shortish runs. It's looks like the original battery is still on it so it might be worth getting it tested and possibly replaced. As for diagnostics is it worth taking it to the stealers or does anyone know anybody with a diagnostic set up in or around norfolk?

Hi Discokev. I had exactly the same problem, that you describe, and to the same extent. Each time it has occurred I do a hard reset as you have also done. I had to do this several times but now the problem has reduced such that I can't remember the last time that it happened. I have no idea why this should need doing (dodgy connection somewhere...) but it seemed better than throwing god knows how much cash at a non structural problem TDV6 HSE AUTO

Hi Kev, Finally someone who has the same problem as me with a similar age vehicle. its been driving me mad. I went to my local dealer and they advised it could be the head unit it could be the battery. I have since had new alt and Battery fitted, hopefully ruling this out.
i went to a non deal specialist in York, he advised it could be a fault with one of the many ECU's used to control the Entertainment system. However this is were it gets painful as to determine which part is faulty he said the only way to tell would be to check them all out systematically, believe there are over 20 in the car.
He told me it was probably a sign that something was going to fail but hadn't quite given up yet. I was looking at fitting a kill switch to the stereo etc as when mine goes it will either turn off completely or stay on.
I know this isnt of great help but if you find a cure please let me know!If idiots could fly this place would be an airport.
Anyone want to buy a SII 88" in kit form....

Agggghhhhhh!!!!! After going months without so much of a hint of a fault the stereo problem is back with a vengeance. The dam thing is freezing nearly every trip now, sometimes after freezing me out of all the controls it will reset by itself but most of the time I'm having to pull the fuse. This time I'm having various different faults but all revolving round the stereo needing resetting. So far I've had:
Stereo freezes, display goes blank and no controls either on the head unit or steering wheel work. Fuse pull req to reset.
Stereo freezes then immediately turns itself off and resets itself a few secs later (as per 1st post)
Stereo looses it's sound, everything else works but req a fuse pull to reset
Stereo looses it's sound and the display pops up for a cd playing however it's just scrolling through the tracks non stop req a fuse pull to reset
Stereo freezes then after 20-30 second then whole unit starts flashing on and off for about 10 sec before it turns itself off and resets itself.
I'm thinking it could be a head unit problem but that's just a stab in the dark, gonna keep an eye out on fleebay for a decent priced replacement unit to try other than that it's just as tootall says 'it gets painful' lol.
Anyone else out there had any of these issues and managed to resolve them without remortgaging there house?

If you pull the mostbus out or a faulty amp is present in the vehicle this might happen. i removed the mostbus from the amp just to see, and sure i lost sound and the stereo froze. reconnected the mostbus and all was good. i found an electrical connector in the A pilar in the footwel. Radio was on and i disconnected this plug, No sound and it looked like the stereo froze. i cant remember exact color of this connector, but it was one of those smaler ones that sits beside some bigger ones. for me this was on the rhs. perhaps you have a fault that comes an goes electrical vise cause of water ingress in these connectors perhaps?

Hmm so it might be worth looking for an amp too! Think I'll have a look for that connector first though when I get five minutes away from the kids thanks for the tip.

Did you manage to resolve the issue with the head unit resetting? I am having the same issues currently with my 2005 HSE. Sometimes the head unit and sat nag screen won't turn off after driving, having to pull the fuse every time i leave the car is getting annoying.

Not yet however it tends to go through phases, over the winter it was doing it 2 or 3 times a journey but the problems stopped again now we've had a bit of nice weather. I have checked all the connections to the head unit and amp and they seem ok but I've yet to check the connection in the footwell parrafin23 suggested. It's on the list of things 'to do'. Just to add to the list off different things it does I've now had a reset followed by constant flashing of the stereo even with the ignition off until I pulled the fuse and the stereo turning itself off altogether and not turning back on again Till the fuse is pulled. Hope you find a solution soon, if you do please share it with me.

I have had the same problems also. I have only had the Disco for 4 weeks and its been nothing but trouble from the day after i picked it up....its all electrical issues. I had central locking pack in..that turned out to be wiring loom sat in a channel of water and rotten wire connections. I also have erratic parking sensors/this issue with the head unit and sat nav screen.....and just last week the rear upper tailgate switch failed. I also sometimes get the passenger seat belt light on when a passenger has left the car without me turning off the engine.
With the stereo if have had the following.
1. Reset, stereo off and sat nag screen off...then back on again after a few seconds.
2. Stereo stays on but screen goes blank and green....music stays on but no control over volume. Sat nav screen stays on. have to pull the fuse to turn off
3. Stereo screen flashes with music still on...no control over the head unit. Pull fuse to reset.
Don't really know where to start with this...one. Although....i did have a error reading from a diagnostic test saying the following. Instrument Cluster U0184-87 Lost connection with Audio Unit. Maybe this could be something to do with the problem.

Does this look like a software problem to anyone? Or could it be a clock spring issue? This is the latest fault from the head unit ....When the screen did this it still played music but no controls working...even with the key removed from the ignition. Only way to turn it off was to pull the fuse.
