Differential oil replacement - type of diff? |
|
I'm sure the answer to this is somewhere to be found on this excellent forum, but I'm struggling to see it.
I'm undertaking my first basic service on my 2005 TDV6, 2.7 diesel HSE. Engine oil, oil filter, and air filter are all done, and I'm working on doing the fuel filter now. After that I want to have a crack at replacing the oil in the front and rear diffs. From the posts I've found here, I note that there are two types of diffs, and I see in the Haynes that there's "non-locking" and "locking (ETM)". I understand that the type and quantity of oil differs depending on type of diff, so I wonder how I tell which I have. I'd be grateful for any advice on this.
Thanks, Darren

If you have the locking diff there is a small motor on the side of it whereas the ordinary diff does not. The oils are different depending on the diff. Front diff is 75w/90 non locking rear diff is the same but not sure on the locking rear diff

Many thanks for the tips, both in this thread and by PM. All very helpful.
One thing I'm not clear on ...
Can both the front and rear diffs be electronic locking, or is it only the rear one that can be?
Also, on a related issue, how often should the transfer GB fluid be changed?
Thanks again,
Darren

Only the rear is fitted with a locking diff (it was an option). I change transfer box oil every two years, it does not take much oil so is cheap insurance. I use Royal Purple Synchromax as the oil

Thanks for that Globetrotter. I should probably have a crack at the transfer box oil too, while I'm under there.
Best wishes, Darren
