Died transmission, torque converter or auto gear box?
Hi,
Unfortunatly after some offroad yesterday (including cross some water 50 cm deep), my transmission can't engage. oh, it's a 05 TDV6 with 190K km on the meter.
Was stuck in offroad tracks and eventually pulled out by my friend to a big road which it got towed.
1. First, found gear sometimes did not engage. Put back to N -> D and it engaged again;
2. After 20 min, we stopped and shut off the engine. When started again, it stopped engage.
3. Tried to put through P/R/N/D and found some clunking noise when it's in D or R.
4, Turned off the car for 30 min, disconnected batt. Felt the temp of the trasmission pan, it's alright. Hot but still can touch it. Kind of normal I think.
5. Turned on the engine again and no difference.
6. Since tow truck can't come into the track, my friend towed me out for around 10KM when engine is on and gear in N. Can hear clunking gear noise when towing...sounds bad..
So far, there's no engine light and the car is already in towing company (160KM away from my home).
Next i'm thinking of finding some knowledgable transmission expert to check how's the damage. Once I confirm which repair shop to go, I'll then call the towing guy to tow my car there.
So here's the question, what went wrong? Trany/touque converter for sure.
Also transmission oil changed around 50K earlier. Firstly ZF fluids but transmission seemed getting some shrudder (well, get worse actually).
Later around 20K (2 years ago), it developed some touque converter slip (slight rev rise/fall). I changed transmission oil again with FUCHS TITAN ATF 4400 (read some article some ppl has very good experience for the oil on ZF cases) and one tube of Dr. Tranny. I should say the transmission feels better after the oil change. Most times, very smooth, no shrudders, just a slight 'kick' from decelerate to accelerate (an old issue).
Just during the trip I was talking to my wife how beautiful the D3 drives and it's been over 2 years of issue free driving.
Then this happened....
Anyone got any ideas?

Before you start spending lots of money, are you sure it's not the selector linkage that's seizing up? Common fault and easily solved.
Also, as you say no drive and clicking noises, make sure your front CV joints are still intact.

Or the selector cable hasnt fallen apart at the gearbox end, happened to me last summer.

Car is not with me, it's 160KM away in the towing company. Unfortunately I can't do any further check ups before go there on the coming weekend...
I'm pretty sure it's not engaging, otherwise even one front axle CV gone and free running, rear axle will still be engaged with center diff lock.
Selector linkage, do you mean the gearbox doesn't know I'm changing from P to D?

Did the gear lever feel "normal" or odd/more fluid when changing?

Thanks guys, yet I don't think it's gear lever issue.
Gear lever feels normal actually.
And the symptom was different to Mikey's How To post. I think the damage will be worse.

Just want to provide an update.
It got fixed weeks ago, turned out to be a front shaft CV failed. It causes all the power output goes to the broken half shaft and car won't be running.
I was wondering the car got central/rear diff that how come one half shaft broken could cause this issue. After I discussed with the repair guy, it's most likely that the diff locks will only engage when detected wheel is free rotating. Yet when CV got issue, wheel is not rolling and diff lock can never gets engaged...

With my first D3 HSE, just after I bought it, 130,000 miles on the clock, I thought it would be a good idea to get it looked at by my local LR specialist. Glad I did as I hadn't heard anything nor had the mechanic who was checking the car, but the N/S front wheel bearing was completely shot! No noise but plenty of play!
They had one is stock, so got on with the job. This was all done whilst I waited, so no pressure!
When it was all done I paid and left. At the end of the road I realised I hadn't picked up the service book!
So turned round went back and parked the car, went in picked up the book, came out started the car put it into drive but it went nowhere, just a rather clunky noise from up front.
The workshop guys came out and had a look, only to discover that the N/S drive shaft was going round but the car wasn't moving.
It was pushed into the workshop, up on the hoist and off with the front N/S wheel.
Somehow, the shaft had been pulled out of the CV joint.
I'm not one for pointing fingers, and the guy who had done the bearing took full responsibility, thinking he had probably pulled the CV joint too hard to get it out or back into the hub during the bearing replacement.
Anyway a new ring clip was found, fitted and the shaft pushed back into the CV joint. Luckily no damage was done to the CV boot, the shaft had just spun in the boot, and as it only happened as I attempted to reverse out of the parking spot.
I was surprised that it didn't transfer drive to the other wheels, but it doesn't, which probably saved a lot of damage to splines etc. in my case, yours too no doubt.
That car went on to clock up many miles (130,000 - 190,000) before I sold it and no more lack of drive!
