Exterior Leds

A similar issue exists for LED bulbs that are sold as upgrades. Pictured is a normal Halogen bulb, above an equivalent, LED conversion part. While these are legal to use within the interior, they are not permitted in any exterior lamp, at the time of writing. Like HID Conversion Kits, this is because the unit’s optics are designed to work with a filament bulb, not an LED type. Recently, a case was reported to us, where an insurance company turned down a claim, because a rear number-plate bulb was fitted with an LED conversion bulb. However, even reputable retailers sell these bulbs but they should be marked “for off-road use only.”

However, new cars are permitted to be fitted with LED/HID headlights and LED side lamps, because the lamp units have been designed and tested to work effectively with the bulbs and have passed the required Type Approval Requirements. If you wish to upgrade a car to HID (or LED) lighting, you have to buy a complete replacement lamp.

Interesting.

Aftermarket numberplate leds can be stupidly bright

Here, when the car was in for inspection (equivalent to what you guys call MOT), I asked the same question because I was curious what is allowed.

Basically a halogen bulb is never allowed to be changed to LED simply by replacing the bulb itself. What is allowed is changing the whole module (as is the example with the rear license plate lights) and then only if the new module has been ECE approved. It was implied that one would fail the inspection should the lights be found to be illegal.

So in summary what you pasted seems to be very similar to what I got here from the guy doing the inspection. Obviously they might not check them in as much detail in every country.

Good I hope they fail every car out there with hid bulbs or leds in a halogen headlight as you get blinded by them as the beam patterns is all
Over the place as the lense is not designed for them and they are not leveld either like a proper Xeon or led headlight and are just owful and will always fail a mot
but a led bulb in a side light or indicator makes no difference and will pass a uk mot as they are not directional like a headlight

I ordered a pair of led front sidelight bulbs last night nut the ones I have gone for look pretty much like normal halogen when off as I don't like the look of the one with all the little chips looking all yellow and odd. Thats just me. Obviously will be a much nicer whiter light when on to match the dipped beam xenons.

Totally agree about stopping people putting hid kits on halogen reflector lenses as they just dont put out the light correctly and just blind everyone coming towards them. That and no one seems to be able to fit normal bulbs correctly these days. The amount of cars I see daily with light beams going here there and everywhere drives me mad. Banging Head

apart from the interior leds which i know aren’t covered i’ve only got leds in the sidelights

So as the Mots are becoming stricter i think to be on the safe side will just replace them with original spec

mot garage can’t say anything then Whistle

drives me nuts and wish there was something that prevented fog lights being turned on when there isn’t any fog , always seem to get one out of line and ends up blinding u

Bulbs arrived today. First impressions is they are the same size as stock halogen bulbs. Not fitted yet as been at work all day. But also found these and have ordered a pair. Cheaper than Powerful and they are in stock. Laughing

I swapped my first LED sidelights as they didn't utilise the reflector at all … just pointed forward like manic mini spotlights.

give me a few mins and i'll find the pics.

ok ... difference should be obvious.

in all honesty, they still perform like mini spots ... at least as i park against our house wall they do, but much better viewed from the front in the dark.

cheers , looks a lot nicer to what i’ve currently got fitted

another reason i just wish to take them out and refit some decent alternative , but know with the MOT changing i won’t be able to have leds in there

try not to cringe as the led doesn’t look very good Whistle
