Overheating Caliper on Nearside Rear

Hi guys,

I finished a short journey yesterday to discover the nearside rear wheel was very hot and i could smell the brakes quite badly. I called up my local LR specialist who told me overheating calipers were a common problem on D4's, and it's always on that particular wheel.

If this is such a common issue, has this happened to any people on here, and also, should Land Rover take some responsibility for this? Especially if its always on the nearside Rear every time.

I’ve just replaced a sticking rear calliper on the NSR. Wasn’t aware it was more common than any other though.
Probably wise to strip the brakes down once a year & make sure everything is free and working as it should.

Thumbs Up

Glad I am not alone, my NSR calliper has started sticking when parked for more then 15 minutes then when move off grinding noise for about 20 or so meters driving then noise goes. Leave it parked for about 15 mins or so drive off again and then grinding noise. Noise goes but when stopped you can tell that it has been binding because of the smell and hhit wheel. Got it booked in on Thursday to be looked at.

depends - if the pins are sticking clean them up or replace but if the piston is rusty/sticking I'd replace the calliper as they cannot generally be freed off properly.

How did you know it was the epb? I'm hoping mine is just the calliper, I had a whole new epb 10k miles ago.

mine was the lever on the handbrake shoes. The n/s was partially seized so it would pull on but remain on when the handbrake was released. Put new handbrake shoes on and thoroughly greased the lever so it shouldn't happen again. Guess that the handbrake hadn't been used for a while and i decided to test it when i bought it. The smelly brake was on the way home from buying it Rolling Eyes

Got everything sorted for £168 all in! Brand new calliper supplied and fitted by local specialists (Rogers of Bedford)

Couldn’t be happier, god know how much a main dealer would have charged for that!

Thanks for the help guys
