Yes, but what does anyone think about LR being owned by an Indian company ?
Somehow the Mahindra Discovery IV doesn't quite trip off the tongue ....
I liked my D2, but my D3's better ....(& the RRS better still)

It wasn't a

BMW Discovery II
Ford Defender etc

Why would anyone Rebrand one of the worlds most recognisable brands it would be throwing money down the drain!

The 2 intrsted Indian companies are amongest the largest in the world so they must be doing somthing right.

or would you prefer BMW again, Buy LR take technology move on, same with the mini name.
just like locusts if you ask me!

Yes Ryan - you are absolutely right. No-one talks of a Moskovich Chimera or an Audi Diablo. A Fiat Enzo or a BMW Silver Spur. Or how about a Fuji Imprezza. Perhaps more surprising is the Renault Navara and even the VW Vaeron.

At the end of the day, these are simply businesses being bought by larger, more profitable businesses in order to make more money for the later.

Nothing much will change I reckon. The LR brand will solider on and I doubt it will be impacted much by a successful new owner. More likely the existing brands in that company's portfolio will glean some useful information etc. However, somehow I prefer not to think of the Mahindra Disco, the Asia Defender and the Indian RR. Next time I phone LakeLand I may get through to a call centre in Hyderabad....... Big Cry

Guess your right there, sorry. But I can't help but feel uneasy at yet another iconic product being passed into far away ownership though. Wonder how long before someone thinks to work out how little it might cost to make these things over there. Just a thought, thats all.

Let us just be thankful that somebody with cash to spare has seen that there is good business sense to buying both Land Rover and Jaguar and that they haven't been left with Ford to wither and then fall off the vine to be lost forever or to become just a name from the past to be stuck onto some special edition BMW of the future like the Wolsley, Riley, Austin Healey and Triumph names.
Now a disillusioned new Land Rover buyer and have jumped ship to something less expensive and more reliable that hugs trees.... now driving a Mini Countryman PHEV as well as my trusty and brilliant 1996 Epsom Green Defender90 Tdi300

You mean like Consignia Wink

I think as long as whoever buys it doesn't start replacing designers with accountants, then the product will improve and grow. If they start trimming features and resilience for costs sake, or start trying to impose their own brand on the car, it will be abandoned in droves as it will no longer be the ultimate off roader that we all know and love.

For me, the name is just a name - it's the sum of the parts that makes it a Landrover. If the Disco IV is brilliant, and they call it the Mahindra IV, what do you think everyone in the know will call it? Yep - it'll be a landrover for as long as it delivers, and eBay will be awash with badge replacements for people to 'correct' the mistake.

If they go a step further and actively encourage the long standing tradition of owner modifications ("Enable the reversing camera input in the SatNav screen? Certainly sir! Just £50, OK?", "Raise the extended mode speed threshold to 45MPH? Certainly sir, sign this waiver for our records and just £50 OK?", "Nosebleed height ultra super extended mode by holding raise for 5 seconds? Certainly sir! Just £50, OK?") then I doubt there'll be any complaints from the die-hard off-road community either, quite the opposite!
 Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?

I am in Delhi at the moment and saw a newspaper yesterday which said that the bid by Indian companies to take over Jaguar were rejected four days ago. The reason given was perceived erosion of the brand image.
Cheers,
Rob

Of course it was - it was from a high quality Indian fish and chip wrapper... not your low quality Mirror/News of the world variety! haha Rolling Eyes

The article mentioned how Indian companies may well be rich, but do not have the cache to attract buyers of exclusive labels. Eg. Orient Express purchase was also rejected as it would reduce the brand image.

Oh, how I long for a ride in a D3... the roads and traffic here are atrocious! Yesterday, I counted 11 cars/trucks lined up at an intersection - to race into 4 lanes on the other side of the intersection. Laughing

FWIW, I don't care who owns LR... as long as they inject enough funds to allow development and production of more magnificent vehicles.
