Auto Box's a few questions
Hi Guys, 3 weeks into the ownership of my Disco (Love it and don't miss my Golf GTi...)
With the Auto box when at Traffic lights or long periods of not moving, is it best to go into Neutral??
Also, not wanting to mention the "fuel consumption issue" but am I best letting the auto choose the best gear, or am I best selecting the gear to reduce revs. Although the engine has Soooo much torque, could having it in the wrong gear and reducing the revs actually use more fuel??
Thanks for any help

To save fuel you are best to select neutral when stationary as this takes the "creep" torque off the engine. It also means less heat is being pumped into the transmission's oil.
I believe the handbook also states this.
Generally I have found no improvement by forcing the auto into a higher gear than it would choose, however I still can't resist pushing it into 6th on motorways where sometimes it's a tad reticent to change.
My 07 is more inclined to change up that was the 05 by the way.

Leave it in D when stopped, until its properly warmed up. Then use N.
A faster warm up will save wear on the engine and gearbox, and will save fuel in the long run, leaving it in D will warm the oils faster.

Having recently moved from a manual to an auto I found this useful, thanks guys. What about the parking brake. ROSPA and driver training sites recommend the hand brake to help if shunted from behind and reducing brake light dazzle.D3 gone for now
