Rear sunroof drain : my flushing technique (+YouTube link)

Dear all,

I’ve finally finished with my sunroof drains. Having replaced all 4 elbows.

One challange I wasn’t expecting was how to flush the rear drains through, as on the front it’s lretty easy as the holes are visible.

Equipment

Hozelock 4mm micro irrigation tubing; at least 3 meters
Hozelock adaptor micro to tap connector
Hose real from tap to your car
Couple of garden hose quick release couplings
General plumbing service check valve
Inspection camera (optional but highly ecommended)

Assembly

Push the 4mm micro irrigation tubing into the tap adapter.

Screw the two adaptor onto one end of the service check valve
Screw the quick connect hose pipe adapter, with tap connector reducer, to the other end of service check valve

Connect to garden hose
Connect garden hose to water supply
Test operation of assembly ensuring that water on/off is completely controlled by service check valve

Trim the other end of the micro irrigation tubing at roughly 45 degree angle to make inserting this into sunroof drain hole easier.

Flushing Technique

Disclaimer : this is a record of how I did this. If you want to try it, do so at your own risk because you have the very real risk of flooding your head lining.

Introduce the trimmed end of your micro irrigation tubing back along the sunroof drain channel, towards the rear of the car.

5his is where an inspection cam is useful so you can verify you are in the right place.

If doing this blind then be certain you are in the right place before flushing, as the drain channel has no roof to it. This means that the micro irrigation tubing can actually pop out over the top into the void of the headlining, and if you turn open the service check valve at that point, you will flood everything!

If you are doing this as part of replacing your sunroof drain elbows, the then you can directly visiualise the flushing process by pulling the end of the drain hose up out of its usual run and putting the end into some sort of collection bucket, before replacing the elbow.

If you are happy the drain circuit is intact and in good order, and this flushing is part of routine maintenance, then you should see water escaping in front of the rear wheel.

I have uploaded a YouTube video demonstrating all this.

Apologies in advance for the terrible audio.

Andy
