Surveys on the News
Is it just me or does anyone else get irritated by the regular insertion of surveys that pepper the news bulletins on TV. "A survey out today by the xxx think tank says that if we leave the EU we will all go to hell in a hand cart" or "75% of people surveyed believe that sea levels will rise if we don't ban the internal combustion engine" etc ad nauseum.
I think the news should contain known events, proven facts or other things that have happened - not what people think may or may not happen if something takes place or doesn't. I understand a survey result is technically a fact in itself but if you watch carefully you may be surprised how many times it happens in any news.
Rant over. Feel better now.

Ah... News?
One of my pet rants relates to the terminology now used in the News - I’m sure it’s now little more than a quaint old fashioned idea, but I always thought that ‘news’ should relate to stuff that had happened - the clue is in the idea of a ‘reporter...’
So, saying that, “Later today, so-and-so will announce that....” - to my mind, that’s little more than PR and means that the news agencies are now little more than mouthpieces for the puff and flummery that comes out from the spin doctors..
Rant over!D4 Commercial - 65 Plate, 2016MY
D5 Commercial - Handed back when I left that job…
D4 Commercial (2014MY) - gone
D4 Commercial SDV6 - Baltic Blue (also gone)
D1 300TDi... 2" lift, HD bumpers (both), detachable tow hitch, 9,500lb winch, 235/85/16 muds and plenty of other toys (gone to make way for the next toy...)
Smiles per Mile - Tornado Motorsports caged Evo 3... 100" Defender look-alike, with Range Rover running gear - all fully IVA'd and registered!

To quote Donald Trump, there's a lot of fake news. The one thing he got right.
We have always been subjected to State properganda. I remember one particular comment about tens of thousands lining a route some Royal Family member was travelling down. It actually turned out to be 150. It's frightening how the media try to manipulate what we think and say.
I also object to Reporters giving opinion. its simply not their job to speculate.

+1
Its clearly because they just don't have news to report on and need to fill in time.
You learn a lot more of the "real world" affairs on this forum.
it all started going downhill with the notion of "24 hour news" ... they have to not just fill the 24 hours but as it's seemingly a competitive market, they have to make their take on the news that bit more interesting than other companies offerings.
why I would want to see someone saying "actual I'm being kept outside the police cordon so can't see what's happening but as soon as I see something I'll let you know" (but stretching that out over 5 minutes, naturally) I really do not know.
I don't think it's the surveys so much as the media's constant need to set a narrative to them to make sure we little people don't have any thoughts of our own. Laura Kuenssberg is one of the worst in my opinion ( ) for this - really dislike her 'news' links and her general air of superiority she thinks she has

I gave up watching the beeb news years ago - hardcore anti British propaganda.
ITV not much better.
I track various news feeds from different sources to get an idea on whats going on.
RT News always good for a laugh to see how old Vlad is thinking.

Agree.
She has a real sneering manner about much of her news delivery and seems to find it impossible to end a report without some (to her) clever, caustic question or comment.
.Arthur.
Comedy was a horse, Harvey a dog, both sadly gone. Thought I was choosing a password!
Currently;
Discovery 3 HSE 2009
101" Fwd. Control 1976
Nuffield 10/90 Tractor (10/60 with 6 cylinder conversion) 1964
I would love to put the news on one day and for the newsreader to say " There is no news today, well non worth mentioning so here is some music instead !" In my dreams eh ?The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;
They just make the best of everything they have.
