Climate control dimming lights?
I usually drive with at least side lights on. Consequently I can't see the air distribution control lights (the red lights that show screen/face/feet) because they have dimmed to about half brightness, and in the daylight, they are very difficult to see.
Has anyone managed to take these off the dimming circuit? It's only these three I want to not dim, everything else is ok.

This is a bugbear of mine too.
I was beginning to think it was a manual gear lever in the way thing but those lights are just plain not bright enough. I'll be watching this thread. Mods:

They're fine in the dark, it's just in the daylight. If I could just make them stay at full brightness.Richard

@ rrhool: A better option might be to switch Hurdigurdie Lights on, that way you have headlights on all the time but the internal lights are up high on Auto during daylight, or all the time if Off but you don't have push forward for high beam.
And I might know where a replacement HVAC unit happens to be hiding.

Cheers DSL. I'm happy only having my sidelights (LED) on, I don't like to wear out the xenon lamps Richard

I had to do a double take on your location, could have sworn it said Yorkshire.

you don't need side lights on all the time, only when its dull.
If you feel that strongly fit some tacky DRL's

Pete K, you've missed my point. I'm happy using my sidelights, I don't want DRL's, I want to make the climate buttons brighter, because they dim when the lights are on.
DSL, there is no Yorkshire in me at all! Little bit of Irish maybe. Richard

well I assume you want some illumination at the front, most of the time.
The LEDs have a resistor in series with them to control the level of current according to the day time illumination requirements. When you put the lights on, they all receive a signal on the CAN bus to dim to the night time setting. This is done electronically by the module controlling the current to the tell tales.
If you were to open them up and change the resistor, you'd find that they would be very very bright and possibly short lived during daylight without the lights on and still very bright at night as they wouldn't dim enough with the lights on.
Unless you can hack the CAN bus and change the value of the illumination signal you're not going to be able to change it and still keep the dimming at night.
You could though design a circuit that uses a separate light sensor to detect darkness to switch a different resistor value in at night, but it's a lot of work for little gain.1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

Thanks TigerRecovery. That's what I wanted to know. Probably too much effort for the little gain.
Pete K. I like to have my sidelights on, because they are on the front and the back.Richard
