Starter Clicking, changed but still clicking |
|
My DS3 cut out on me whilst reversing the other day, it now only clicks when turning the key, so got a used starter motor and put that in.
It is still clicking even after changing it for the other one.
Has anyone came across this before or have any suggestions as to what else it may be?
TIA

Check the obvious things first like a good battery, are the terminals nice and tight, earthing straps etc.

Could the used starter be duff?
If not, then I’m sorry to have to ask, but can you turn the engine by hand? Could be seized.

There is the possibility that the starter could be faulty, I will need to check that the engine is still turning freely, i will get this done later this evening or in the morning.
UPDATE, Engine turns freely

you need to check the main 400A fuse, just below the battery + terminal (in a black plastic box, bolted to the terminal)
or check for +12v on the top alternator terminal if easier

Poor earth connection between car body and engine, try a temporary earth with a jump lead from the battery earth terminal to the engine to test. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

As Pete suggested check the 400 amp fuse, quick check just short out the two big connections on the starter if nothing then it’s your fuse.

Using a multimeter it looks like this is the issue, there is no feed going through this fuse. Now to try and find another at a weekend to see if it is definitely the issue.

The main thick cable under the car rubs on the front diff.
So have an inspection first.
Some PVC tape, cable tie, and reposition of the cable so it doesn't rub again, maybe a solution.
Get a fuse on order.
