Electronic Parking Brake Rebuild or Replace
Hi Rover People,
I was recently stuck in a car park on a hill with a jammed Electronic Park Brake and had to cut the cable with an angle grinder as the manual release would not free the brake. I tried all the usual procedures including the unjam function in my ICarsoft LR V3.0 Diagnostics tool. I also tried driving forwards and backwards gently to attempt to free the brake.
I’m trying to decide whether its better to purchase a rebuild kit and install new gears and cables myself or bite the bullet and purchase a brand new genuine module and cables from Ebay for a cost of over $1100AUD.
I think reinstalling a new module and completing the bedding in procedure will be challenging enough so I’m leaning towards purchasing the complete unit.
Thanks

One way or another, you'll need too remove the module and cables from the car, and replacing the gears in the module is relatively easy compared to the rest.

It is actually possible to rebuild the module including replacing gears in situ. I did it last weekend and it cost me about £50 in parts including new handbrake shoes and springs.
You'll find guides on here explaining how to open the unit and unjam.
You can ignore the tedious bit about unwinding the brass rod turn by turn, simply connect a 12v supply to the motor and save yourself a ball-ache. I used my jump starter.

I bought the kit from ebay with 2 cables and gears to rebuild about £90, and advanced factors charge double that for the cables. Its actually very easy once you get the old cables out. Mines a 2005 and every bolt need drilling/cutting or belt sanded out. Its actually one of the worst jobs I’ve done on a car(out of hundred’s).
If i had the body off for any reason id defo renew handbrake cables if they haven’t been done already.
But the kit was fine and a good saving.

^ that's why I didn't remove the cables, I knew it would be difficult.
It's really not that bad to do this under the car. 6/10 difficulty rating.

Yes the swap over of the internals are fairly straight forward. I found it a bit of guess work where to leave it set before closing up. I just copied a disco_mikey’s pic and haven’t had any issues. Also new shoes went inside the disks with out much issue.
I just hope its not the cables causing the resistance for the actuator to operate. Its an aweful lot of work and the longer you leave it the harder it is, were as a cable replacement should mean 10 plus years no issues🤞
