Broken head unit / stereo harman kardon. Discovery 3
Unfortunately it seems our head unit just stopped working yesterday.
It spat out a cd then wouldn’t change station, turn off. None of the buttons on the control panel worked. The station stayed on but the control panel wouldn’t work, the steering wheel controls also don’t work.
Today we did the hard reset on the car but this unfortunately didn’t fix the stereo.
We have tried to get the unit replaced but keep hitting brick walls, no one seems to be able to offer a solution.
Because our stereo is the Harman Kardon one we can’t just swap to an after market head unit?
Land Rover have said a new unit is around £1600/1700. There are second hand units for sale but Land Rover also told me these won’t work as they are programmed to the car and they can’t reprogram them?
Has anyone any advice what we do next? Has anyone changed a head unit like ours?
We have the 6cd Harman Kardon unit but not the sat nav screen. Part number vux 500320.
Look forward to your replies,
Thanks.

These are not VIN locked, LR's talking balldocks. About £200 is the going rate for a second hand one.

Thanks for the fast reply!! 😀 so we can just get a second hand unit and just plug it in? We don’t need to get it reprogrammed?

Hold fire and wait til others confirm. My techie superpowers are weak compared with many others out there.
This was the unit I sold from my scrapped 06 D3 S. Would have been a straight swap for a head unit, but it didn't get that use.

Thanks again for the reply. The unit looks exactly the same. Did the people who bought it have any problems with it with the programming? Amy x

This is ours.
Do the numbers have to match perfectly? Can the last 3 numbers be different? Land Rover offered us the replacement but I’m sure ended in490?

From that date on your head unit a 05 model year as well, that would figure. Best wait to see what peeps think will work parts wise. Lots of experience out there.

I'll swap you for mine.........but it's also knackered!!
Will no longer accept cd's, the slot feels solid inside and the play button doesn't work either

I’ll swap! All the cds belong to my 5year old daughter, they are all Disney songs that I can live without hearing again 😂

That would be me. I have that DSL's stereo. Very long story as to the stereo, in perfect working order... but I must put it back together and sell it on. But it's of no use to you as both stereos look the same but have different part numbers, ending 330 as opposed to 320. You need the exact same part number.
