Inverters / Aux port / Laptops / Playing DVD's etc etc

Using an inverter to power the laptop in "keep the kids busy with DVD's" mode, with a lead from the laptop into the AUX port etc etc, I get a load of static type noise through the speakers which is clearly generated by the inverter 'cus if I switch it off it goes away. I've tried a few laptop to AUX port leads but all the same, although the leads arn't that good a quality. So before I shell out on a more expensive shielded lead, is there anything else I could / should try ?

I had the same interfearance with the ps2, and low volume through the dvd. I`ve since done away with the PS2 and now getting a psp. (easy answer),
and also changed the over head centurion dvd player which was crap, and put in an Alpine dvd under the passenger seat which is the nuts. This runs straight from the car power, doing away with the inverter which made a horrible beep every time i started the car up.
I know this is the lazy solution, but it works for me.
Next job is to get two screens put into the headrest`s although they will be small ones.............

you are both experiencing interference from cheap invertors!

The Halfords one is particularly bad!

There are a number on the market which do the job well - there is one for a PS2 (cant remember who makes it but its a london based company) which is no bigger than a laptop PSU, has a Fig.8 fly lead for input into PS2 and works a treat!

No beeps either - from memory about £80-90

yep, seem to recall the invertor was cheap as chips, but at the time only needed for non audio devices. Woodman, so the AUX to laptop lead is a red herring ?

yeah it is! - the power interferance noise is being applied to the ground and is common between the DC PSU of the laptop and the signal ground of the aux socket - hence why you can hear it through the speakers

the way to prove it is the run a laptop WITHOUT the PSU (ie on batteries) and the plug it in and try it

I am sure you will find it much improved!
