Replaced noisy water pump. |
|
So I finally found the root of the grumbly vibrating noise in my D4, I replaced the water pump today. Piece of cake to do. Fan off, serpentine belt off, three 8mm bolts, catch the coolant that glugs out, refit everything in the reverse order, refill with fresh antifreeze, check for leaks, job done.
Of course, being a Land Rover it decided to throw all the coolant out again on the A500 on my way home. I ignored the "Coolant Level Low" message as maybe a bit of air working it's way out. Imagine my surprise when I got home and found the expansion tank was empty and under the bonnet was, er, wet. Fortunately it hadn't run dry and hasn't done any harm, but I had to get the pump out again before the school run.
Turned out the o-ring on the new pump had got trapped when I fitted it and got cut in two places. I refitted the old one and it's been fine since... Much quieter in the cabin and less grumbly all round. At least until the wife gets back and I have to explain the extra £30 on antifreeze and the fact the dishwasher remains unemptied and the dogs haven't been walked 😂
Still, it's satisfying doing a job yourself (twice!) and getting a good result in the process. Jaguar Land Rover: "Building great cars, badly."
